Gauff Powers Into First Us Open Semi-Finals Against Muchova

American teenager Coco Gauff delighted the home fans by reaching her first US Open semi-finals with a 6-0 6-2 victory over Iga Swiatek's conqueror Jelena Ostapenko on Tuesday.

Gauff, whose lead-up to the US Open included hardcourt titles in Washington and Cincinnati, converted six of her seven break points and dropped serve just once during the 67-minute match on a sun-drenched Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The 19-year-old is the first American teenager to reach the final four at Flushing Meadows since Serena Williams was the runner-up to her older sister, Venus, in 2001.

Up next for Gauff will be Czech 10th seed and French Open finalist Karolina Muchova after she hammered 31 winners in a comfortable 6-0 6-3 victory over Romanian 30th seed Sorana Cirstea.

With her win, Muchova became only the second Czech player to reach the women's singles semi-final at Roland-Garros and the US Open in a calendar year, after Helena Sukova in 1986.

On Wednesday, a chaotic scene unfolded as officers of the Nigerian Police Force discharged tear gas in response to students from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) who had gathered to protest against a tuition fee increase.

Initially, the protest seemed peaceful, with students rallying around the school to voice their concerns. However, tensions escalated when police officers, who were present to monitor the students, fired shots.

The day before, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) had warned the Department of State Services (DSS), cautioning against obstructing students from exercising their universally recognized right to protest. NANS argued that the DSS's statement on Monday, suggesting that some politicians were inciting student leaders to violent protests against the Federal Government on socio-economic issues, was mere propaganda. Giwa Temitope, the National Public Relations Officer of the union, confidently asserted that the protest would proceed as planned.

Tribunal Dismisses Suit For Disqualifying Shettima

The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal has dismissed a suit brought before it by the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), in which they sought the disqualification of Vice President Kashim Shettima.

The APM argued that the All-Progressives Congress (APC) had improperly sponsored Shettima by nominating him as the vice-presidential candidate for the election.

The opposition party claimed that Shettima was still the APC candidate for the Borno Central Senatorial District on July 14 when he accepted the nomination for the vice-presidential candidate. However, in its ruling on Wednesday, Justice Haruna Tsanani of the PEPT declared that the APM's suit, which revolved around the alleged multiple nominations of VP Shettima, fell under the category of a pre-election matter and therefore lacked the jurisdiction to entertain it.

The court also held that the APM lacked the necessary legal standing to institute matters on the nomination and sponsorship of Shettima and described it as an abuse of the court process.

Tinubu To Indian Billionaire: I’ll Break All Bottlenecks

President Bola Tinubu has said his administration would dismantle all barriers to investment to rekindle confidence in Nigeria’s economy.

He emphasised that the country will soon become a destination of choice for investors because of measures being put in place to protect domestic and foreign investment.

President Tinubu gave the assurance in New Delhi, India, during his meeting with the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Hinduja Group of Companies, Prakash Hinduja.

The meeting occurred within 90 minutes of his arrival in India for the G-20 Summit.

The Hinduja Group of Companies is a conglomerate with a total asset portfolio exceeding $100 billion.

A statement by the president’s spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, said following the meeting, the Indian billionaire businessman proposed an automobile manufacturing deal with Nigeria.

Ministers of Finance Wale Edun, Trade and Industry Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite and Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar accompanied the president to the meeting.
