Banky W Reflects On Reps Rerun A Second Chance, A Miracle

Renowned singer-turned-politician Bankole Wellington, known as Banky W, has expressed gratitude for what he considers a miraculous turn of events at the Election Petitions Tribunal.

This second chance to secure the Eti-Osa Federal Constituency seat in Lagos State has left him in awe. Late in the evening on September 11, 2023, the tribunal rendered a verdict nullifying Thaddeus Attah's victory under the Labour Party. The February 25 election was declared inconclusive due to the absence of voting in several polling units. Attah had been initially declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with 24,075 votes. In comparison, Bank W of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Ibrahim Obanikoro of the All-Progressives Congress (APC) trailed with 18,666 and 16,901 votes, respectively.

In response to petitions submitted by the first and second runners-up, the court mandated INEC to organise a supplementary election within 90 days across all 33 polling units where voting was not conducted.

In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics yesterday, September 14, 2023, Banky W remarked, “Personally, this is a miraculous turn of events for me, getting another opportunity to conclude the election. I believe it underscores the power of resilience, faith, and the united determination of citizens eager to contribute to restoring our democracy.”

He emphasised, “Many individuals were understandably disheartened by their inability to participate in that election. This highlights a crucial aspect of our democracy: ensuring that people are not denied their constitutional right to engage in the electoral process.”

Super Falcons Striker Oparanozie Retires From Football

Super Falcons striker Desire Oparanozie has officially announced her retirement from football at all levels.

Oparanozie on Wednesday confirmed that she will be hanging up her boots for both country and club in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).

"To my fans, family, and friends, thank you for the show of love and support over the years. It's time to take a bow, as I believe there's no better time than now," she wrote.

"I am officially announcing my retirement from professional football for both club and country.

"To every team and coach I have played for, to every mate I have played alongside, and to every opponent I have played against, thank you all for being part of this incredible journey.

"Thank you, football, thank you, Nigeria," the vastly experienced Super Falcons attacker posted.

Oparanozie last featured in a football match during the 2023 Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand last month.

In her final appearance, the 29-year-old failed to score a spot-kick after coming on as a substitute as the Super Falcons fell 4-2 via penalty shootout to the Three Lionesses of England in the second round of the World Cup.

Having made her senior team debut for the Super Falcons of Nigeria in 2010, she played at the 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023 editions of the Women's World Cup.

She was part of the Super Falcons teams, which won the 2010-, 2014-, 2016-, and 2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) titles.

Oparanozie kicked off her club career at Bayelsa Queens before moving to Delta Queens, after which she secured a transfer abroad.

She last played for Wuhan Chegu Jianghan FC, but before then, she featured for clubs in European countries such as France, Turkey and Germany.

Man Utd Announce New Shirt Deal With US Firm Qualcomm

Manchester United have announced a bumper sponsorship deal with US-based Qualcomm Technologies, whose Snapdragon brand will replace the TeamViewer logo on their shirts from next season.

The Premier League club, who did not reveal the deal's financial details, reportedly targeted an annual agreement worth £60 million ($75 million).

It is understood the figure equals or even surpasses the previous biggest shirt deal in football history.

Qualcomm has been one of United's global partners since last year.

"Manchester United plc has agreed to an expanded strategic collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies, Inc, that will see the Snapdragon brand displayed on the front of the club's famous shirt," the club said in a statement confirming the agreement.

It added: "Under the expanded agreement, Snapdragon will become Manchester United's front of-shirt partner from the start of the 2024/25 season, featuring on the home, away and third kits of the men's and women's teams."

United have not won the Premier League since former manager Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

Erik ten Hag's team have won just two of their first four league matches this season, with fans voicing their frustration at unpopular owners, the Glazers.

United's share price tumbled last week after reports that the Glazers had halted plans to sell the club.

I Will Seek Psychological Help – Tottenham Striker Richarlison

Richarlison was pictured in tears after being substituted during Brazil's 5-1 win over Bolivia on Saturday.

He said the reaction was down to "getting the things happening off the pitch out of my system".

Richarlison has scored only four goals in 40 games for Spurs since joining for £60m from Everton last summer.

"I went through a turbulent time off the pitch during these past five months," he told Brazilian newspaper O Globo.

"Now things are a bit more stable at home. People who only had their eyes on my money are no longer close to me.

"Things are going to flow now, and I'm certain I will have a good run at Tottenham and make things happen again.

"I'm going to return to England and seek psychological help from a psychologist to strengthen my mind. That's what it is about, to come back stronger."

Richarlison missed a great chance before being replaced in the 71st minute in the home World Cup qualifier against Bolivia in Belem and was substituted 64 minutes into Tuesday's 1-0 win over Peru in Lima.

O Globo reported that Richarlison has split with long-term agent Renato Velasco.

"That moment of sadness wasn't about playing badly," said Richarlison.

"In my opinion, I didn't play a bad match in Belem. It was more about getting the things happening off the pitch out of my system, which had gotten out of control not because of anything I'd done but because of people close to me."

Brazil play World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela on 13 October and Uruguay on 18 October.

Tottenham, second in the Premier League, host Sheffield United on Saturday.

"I think I will be part of the next (Brazil) line-up - that's what I'm working towards," said Richarlison.

"It's about doing a good run at Tottenham. I'm going to sit down and talk to them. I need a good run, get into the flow of play and settle in.".
