Inter Miami Put Four Past Toronto Despite Messi Early Exit

Inter Miami shrugged off an injury concern to Lionel Messi to boost their Major League Soccer playoff hopes with a 4-0 thrashing of Toronto FC 4-0 on Wednesday.

Messi returned to the starting line-up after skipping Saturday’s 5-2 defeat at Atlanta due to muscle fatigue but left the field in the 38th minute looking uncomfortable.

His former Barcelona team-mate, Spaniard Jordi Alba, who had also sat out the trip to Atlanta, also limped off three minutes earlier in the game.

Miami coach Gerardo Martino said the pair are now ruled out for Sunday’s Florida derby with Orlando City and was uncertain about their involvement in next week’s US Open Cup final.

“We have to go daily, see the doctor’s report, what they tell us, and we will decide. There is no ‘chance’ that they will be there on Sunday,” he said.

“I don’t think it’s anything new or bigger than what they had been having. It’s just fatigue; I don’t think there is a muscular injury,” he said, defending the decision to play them.

“Everything was in place for the players to play … There is no possibility (that they were pressured to play). If we made them play, they were fit to play.”

“After talking to them, I don’t have the same pessimism I had when I had to take them out,” he said.

Despite losing their star and one of their most influential players, Miami easily swept aside the Eastern Conference’s bottom club, Messi’s replacement Robert Taylor scoring twice after coming on.

Facundo Farias opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time with a blistering volley after Toronto keeper Tomas Romero had meekly palmed out a Noah Allen cross.

Taylor then made it 2-0 in the 54th minute with an outstanding individual strike, dribbling across the box from the left before unleashing a sharply angled drive back into the bottom corner.

Adekuoroye Qualifies For 2024 Olympics

Nigerian female freestyle wrestler Odunayo Adekuoroye has become the country’s first grappler to qualify for next year’s Olympic Games in Paris after winning the bronze medal in women’s 57kg at the ongoing World Championships in Belgrade on Wednesday.

Adekuoroye won her third-place fight against Elvira Kamaloglu, defeating her Turkish opponent 9-5 to secure a spot for Paris.

Paris 2024 will be Adekuoroye’s third Olympics, and she will be gunning for the elusive medal after disappointments in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

The 29-year-old, who missed the African Wrestling Championship earlier this year, was charged for her first world title but lost 6-4 to world No.1 and India’s Sarita Mor in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.

She, however, was able to compete in the repechage on Wednesday, which propelled her to winning her third World Championships bronze medal and a spot at next year’s Olympics.

Meanwhile, 11-time African champion and silver medallist at Tokyo 2020, Blessing Oborududu, narrowly lost to Vusala Parfianovich in the women’s 68kg quarter-finals, just as Esther Kolawole also lost 7-1 to world No. 8 Grace Bullen of Norway in the quarter-finals of the women’s 62kg event.

Oborududu and Kolawole will have a chance to punch their Olympic tickets on Thursday (today) in the repechage if their conquerors progress to the final of their respective events.

Ondo Assembly Initiates Impeachment Move Against Deputy Governor

The Ondo State House of Assembly has taken steps towards possibly removing Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa amidst allegations of serious misconduct.

It has come to light that Aiyedatiwa is under investigation for purportedly authorizing N300 million to acquire a bulletproof SUV for personal use while in office as the acting governor.

Aiyedatiwa assumed the role of acting governor during Governor Rotimi Akeredolu's absence for medical treatment, serving from June 13th to September 9th until the governor's return.

During the recent plenary session, the Assembly introduced a petition against Aiyedatiwa, which had garnered the signatures of nine out of the 17 members of the House. Speaker Olamide Oladiji presided over the session.

The Majority Leader of the House, Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi, cited Section 188 of the constitution in support of his proposal that the Assembly summon the deputy governor to address the allegations against him. This motion received a second from Tope Agbulu, the Akoko South-West Constituency 2 representative.

Consequently, the House instructed Clerk Benjamin Jaiyeola to invite Aiyedatiwa for further proceedings.

CJN Laments Steady Rise In Political Cases

During the swearing-in ceremony of newly appointed Justices of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, Chief Justice Olukayode Ariwoola expressed deep concern regarding the overwhelming caseload of judges, especially those related to political matters.

Justice Ariwoola emphasised the need for a shift towards alternative dispute resolution methods, asserting that this approach would not only alleviate the burden on justices but also conserve valuable judicial resources.

He urged the jurists to uphold their esteemed reputation and resist any allurements that may accompany extravagant gifts.

Following the Court of Appeal's practice direction, which permits a roster of 90 justices, the addition of nine new justices increases the total number of judges from 71 to 80. This move aims to enhance the capacity of the court to handle its caseload effectively.
