Documents From Tinubu’s Chicago University Delivered To Atiku’s Legal Team

The Chicago State University (CSU) has released the school documents of President Bola Tinubu to the presidential candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar.

Atiku had requested the documents to back his allegation of forgery of the CSU certificate against Tinubu, to say Tinubu was not qualified to run for the election, which he won.

The President had supplied certificates from the Chicago State University to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to secure eligibility to participate in the election.

On Saturday, a United States of America court ordered CSU to release Tinubu’s academic records for verification and in support of Atiku’s petition challenging the result of the 2023 presidential poll.

In a judgment, Justice Nancy Maldonado dismissed the objection Tinubu raised against Atiku’s request and expressly ordered that the CSU submit the academic records to Atiku.

Subsequently, the university presented to Atiku’s legal team a cache of documents connected to the President’s education at the institution and copies of certificates with redacted names issued to other persons about the same time the Nigerian President finished school in 1979.

Nigerian Labour Unions Suspend Nationwide Strike

In a pivotal turn of events, the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Union (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have temporarily called off the nationwide strike they had planned in response to the Federal Government's perceived inaction regarding their demands, which were fueled by the considerable hardships experienced by Nigerians due to the fuel subsidy removal.

To find a resolution and prevent the strike, the government invited organized labour, with the meeting chaired by Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Following extensive discussions on Sunday, October 1, 2023, the leadership of organized labour committed to convene with their internal bodies to assess whether to proceed with the strike or cancel it altogether. After further deliberations culminating on Monday, October 2, 2023, the union temporarily suspended the strike for 30 days.

In a joint statement, signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero, General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja, TUC President Festus Osifo, and Secretary General Nuhu Toro, the Federal Government has been urged to address the issue of withheld salaries for university staff.

"The NLC and TUC have decided to postpone the planned Nationwide strike, initially set to commence on Tuesday, the 3rd of October, 2023, for 30 days."

"As of September, Federal Government workers will receive a wage increment of N35,000 (thirty-five thousand Naira) per month, pending the finalization of a new national minimum wage law."

"The outstanding Salaries and Wages of Tertiary Education workers in Federal-owned educational institutions will be the subject of further discussions with the Ministry of Labour and Employment," the statement read.

APM Asks Supreme Court To Nullify Tinubu’s Victory

The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has filed 10 grounds of Appeal before the Supreme Court challenging the decision of the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC), asking that the victory of President Bola Tinubu, be nullified.

In a notice of appeal filed by its new counsel, Chukwuma-Machukwu Ume, the APM is asking the apex court to set aside the judgment of the PEPC for it called its numerous errors in law.

The party said that sections 131 and 142 (1) of the 1999 Constitution are inextricably linked and neither can be confined as a pre-election matter, as these qualifications are conditions precedent to, for being elected into the office of President.

The appellant’s petition was not one founded solely on nomination, but primarily that President Tinubu contested the presidential election without a lawful running mate.

The party added that the withdrawal of Ibrahim Kabir Masari and the expiry of the 14 days permissible for changing, withdrawing, or dead candidates under Section 33 of the Electoral Act 2022, made Tinubu’s election and return, invalid.

According to the party, the PEPC abandoned its duty and jurisdiction of hearing and determining its question of whether President Tinubu and Kashim Shettima were “validly elected” to the office of President and Vice President under the Constitution.
