Alarming Surge: Nigeria Battles Lassa Fever Outbreak In 2023

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has recorded a staggering 1,068 cases of Lassa fever across 112 local government areas in 28 states.

This data from the Lassa Fever Situation Report for Week 37 (Sep. 11 -17, 2023) highlights a concerning situation.

Ominously, 75% of these cases have emerged in Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi States, as reported by the NCDC via its official website. Lassa fever, a viral hemorrhagic fever caused by the Lassa virus, primarily plagues West Africa, including Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea, and Nigeria. The virus is transmitted to humans through contact with the urine or faeces of infected rodents, specifically the multimammate rat.

There are 7,352 individuals with suspected cases, and the infection has claimed the lives of at least 181 people in the country. The case-fatality ratio currently stands at 16.9%.

The report also reveals a decline in the case fatality rate compared to 2022 (19.1%). In 2023, 28 states have reported at least one confirmed case across 112 local government areas. The three heavily affected states—Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi—account for 75% of all confirmed cases, with Ondo leading at 35%, followed by Edo at 29%, and Bauchi at 11%.

The age group most affected is 21-30 years, though cases range from 1 to 93 years, with a median age of 32. The male-to-female ratio for confirmed cases is nearly 1:1.

Tragically, in 2023, 49 healthcare workers across the country have been infected with Lassa fever. The National Lassa Fever Multi-partner, Multi-sectoral Emergency Operations Centre has been activated to coordinate response activities at all levels.

Prevention efforts emphasize avoiding contact with rodents and their droppings, maintaining good personal hygiene, and taking precautions when caring for infected individuals. Early diagnosis and prompt medical intervention are crucial in managing the disease and averting complications.

Tragic Boat Accident Claims 30 Lives In Kebbi

In a devastating incident on Monday, a boat with more than 50 passengers capsized in the Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State, the loss of at least 30 lives.

Bala Yauri, the Chairman of Yauri LGA, confirmed the heart-wrenching event to Voice of America via phone, expressing the profound grief that has befallen the local community. He revealed that local divers are working tirelessly to recover the bodies of those who tragically drowned in the river.

"From the information I gathered, more than fifty persons were involved in the accident while some of them escaped, but as of now that I am talking to you, over thirty of them are still trapped in the river," he stated. "We have mobilised the local divers to try and locate bodies of the victims for proper evacuation and possibly befitting burials following Islamic rights. The boat, as I heard, carried passengers who are mostly traders from either Niger State or Kebbi State alongside foodstuffs for sale before the unfortunate incident."

An eyewitness, Alhaji Sani Yauri, confirmed that the accident was caused by a sudden and powerful gust of wind, leading to the boat's driver losing control.

"I was there when the incident happened; it was as a result of heavy wind, which resulted in the boat's driver losing control, and it capsized immediately," he recounted.

Because of attempts to reach out to the spokesperson of the Nigerian Police Force in the state, DSP Nafiu Abubakar, no response was received, neither to calls nor text messages sent at the time of compiling this report.

EFCC Initiates Extradition Proceedings For Diezani, Secures Arrest Warrant

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has obtained an arrest warrant as it begins the extradition process of former Minister of Petroleum Resources Diezani Alison-Madueke from the United Kingdom back to Nigeria to face the 13-count charges bordering on money laundering levelled against her by the anti-graft agency.

The Commission further revealed that the charges for which Diezani is answerable cover jurisdictions in Dubai – the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Nigeria.

Its Spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the development. The EFCC alleged that the former Minister stole 2.5 billion dollars from the Nigerian government while she was a Minister.

She had appeared before the Westminster Magistrates Court in London over an alleged 100,000 pounds bribe.

There are feelers that an informal interagency collaboration between the EFCC and the UK’s NCA led to the ongoing trial of Diezani in London.
