Simi Participates in Anti-Tax Protests in Kenya

Nigerian singer Simisola Kosoko, popularly known as Simi, has voiced her support for the ongoing anti-tax hike protests in Kenya. Reports indicate that Kenyan youths are marching against the proposed tax increases in widespread demonstrations tagged ‘RejectFinanceBill2024.’

According to Amnesty Kenya, five people were shot dead and dozens wounded after police clashed with protesters who stormed the parliament building in Nairobi on Tuesday.

Reacting on her X handle on Tuesday night, Simi expressed solidarity with the demonstrators. She stated, “It is both powerful and heartbreaking for a people to have to fight and die for freedoms and rights.”

The singer wrote, “I stand with the people of Kenya. It is both powerful and heartbreaking for a people to have to fight and die for freedoms and rights. Godspeed and Strength. #RejectFinanceBill2024.”

In a series of other posts, she added, “Wow. When you’ve had enough, the fight is almost inevitable. African leaders – haven’t you done enough? I can’t wait for the day Africa is not a weapon fashioned against Africans. All of this amazing Black power and human resource, but the majority are not likely to thrive unless they run.”

Naira Abuse: Cubana Chief Priest Forfeits N10m as Court Dismisses Charges

Justice Kehinde Ogundare of the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos Tuesday, June 25, 2024, struck out the charge of naira abuse filed against celebrity bartender, Pascal Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The judge also directed Okechukwu to forfeit the sum of N10million to the Federal Government as part of an out-of-court deal the defendant agreed with the EFCC in place of the charge.

This was contained in the terms of settlement agreement with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) which was adopted before the trial judge, Justice Kehinde Ogundare on Tuesday.

At the proceedings, Counsel for the EFCC, Bilkisu Buhari-Bala, informed the court that parties in the charge entered into the out of-court settlement and same was duly signed by both parties.

The defendant’s counsel, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chikaosolu Ojukwu commended the reasonable action of the anti-graft agency in having the matter resolved. He said the defendant is equally remorseful and promises to turn over a new leaf going forward.

Ojukwu also said that the consequence of the settlement is for the court to dismiss the charge.

Justice Ogundare in his short ruling adopted the terms of settlement and consequently struck out the charge.

The terms of the settlement agreement according to Section 14 (2) of the EFCC Establishment Act, 2004, read:

“The agreement applies only to the findings relating to contraventions of the law contained in the pending charge preferred against the defendant.

“The defendant entered into a bond with the EFCC to be of good behavior and never indulge in any Economic and Financial Crime or related offenses.

“The Defendant shall engage in rigorous and intensive sensitization and/or campaign against the abuse of coins and notes issued under the CBN Act as legal tender.

“The defendant shall bi-monthly post on his various social media handles a minimum of two video clips of his sensitization/campaign against abuse of naira and sundry offenses.

“The Defendant shall pay to the consolidated revenue fund of Federation such sum not below the sum of Ten million naira (N10,000,000:00) only upon the execution of this agreement.”

Media personality Oladotun Ojuolape Kayode, known as Do2dtun, has issued a warning to Nigerian artists ahead of the wedding of their colleague Davido and his fiancée Chioma. Davido recently confirmed that their wedding will take place on June 25 in Lagos.

With the wedding less than 24 hours away, Do2dtun advised artists to refrain from releasing any new songs until the end of the week. He pointed out that everyone’s attention would be focused on Davido and Chioma’s wedding, leaving little interest in new music releases.

On his Instagram page, he wrote, "Do not release your song today, Monday, until the end of the week. You know why? People will be UNAVAILABLE to stream it."
