Oscar-winning ‘Titanic’ Producer Jon Landau Dies at 63

Jon Landau, the Oscar-winning producer renowned for his work with director James Cameron on "Titanic" and the "Avatar" series, has died at 63. Alan Bergman, Disney Entertainment co-chairman, confirmed Landau's death on Saturday without specifying the cause.

Bergman praised Landau, saying, "Jon was a visionary whose extraordinary talent and passion brought some of the most unforgettable stories to life on the big screen. His remarkable contributions to the film industry have left an indelible mark, and he will be profoundly missed. He was an iconic and successful producer, yet an even better person—a true force of nature who inspired all around him."

Landau's career began in the 1980s as a production manager, eventually leading to his role as producer on James Cameron's "Titanic." The film became the first to surpass $1 billion in global box office earnings and won 11 Oscars, including Best Picture. "I can’t act and I can’t compose and I can’t do visual effects. I guess that’s why I’m producing," Landau joked while accepting the award with Cameron.

His collaboration with Cameron continued with "Avatar," a groundbreaking sci-fi epic that shattered box office records and remains one of the highest-grossing films ever. Landau was instrumental in the development and defense of the ambitious "Avatar" sequels.

Jon Landau is survived by his wife of nearly 40 years, Julie, and their sons, Jamie and Jodie.

Ghanaian Chef Smith Caught Falsifying Guinness World Record Attempt in Cooking Marathon

Ghanaian Chef Ebenezer Smith, also known as Millennium Chef Smith, has been apprehended and is currently held at La Police Station for allegedly fabricating a Guinness World Record claim in a marathon cooking event. Smith recently presented a certificate asserting himself as the new record holder for an 820-hour and 25-minute cook-a-thon, purportedly conducted from February 1 to March 6, 2024.

This announcement was made during a press conference at La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra, accompanied by a lavish event featuring performances by Praye Tietia, Yaw Tog, Amerado, Kofi Jamar, and the Asakaa Boys.

In his address, Smith expressed profound gratitude and described the occasion as a monumental day in his life. However, the legitimacy of his claim was promptly debunked by Alina Polianskaya, the PR Executive for Guinness World Records (GWR), who confirmed to BBC that Smith's certificate was not genuine. The current record holder for the longest cooking marathon by an individual remains Alan Fisher of Ireland, who achieved a time of 119 hours, 57 minutes, and 16 seconds in Matsue, Japan, from September 28 to October 3, 2023.

Following the revelation of the falsified record, Smith was arrested by the police. Reports indicate that he had received substantial financial support from sponsors under false pretenses. Efforts to obtain a statement from La Police regarding the incident were unsuccessful.

Alan Fisher's achievement surpasses the previous record held by Nigerian chef Hilda Baci by over 24 hours, solidifying his place as a notable figure in culinary world records.

The maid of the late Nick Imudia, former Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian e-commerce giant Konga, revealed their final conversation before his death was announced last week. The friend recounted, “She said Nick told her to keep the numbers, and that she would need them at the appropriate time. After that, he went into the bathroom, and she heard the shower running, indicating he was having a bath. After some time, she noticed the shower was still running and wondered what he could be doing for so long. She knocked on the door but got no response, so she left.

“Moments later, the private guard knocked on the door and informed her to come and see what had happened to Nick. She rushed downstairs and found him in a terrible state. She then rushed back upstairs and found the shower still running. When she opened the bathroom door, she discovered it was empty.”

The family, through a statement, has ruled out suicide as the cause of Imudia’s death, stating that he never showed any signs of stress or depression. The family has also requested the release of his body for burial.

Meanwhile, detectives from the Homicide section of the State Criminal Investigative Department in Yaba, Lagos, are investigating the cause of death and were expecting some of those invited for questioning as of 11 a.m. yesterday.
