Popular Nigerian comedian and activist, Mr Macaroni, has condemned the use of political connections to unlawfully detain citizens, urging people to seek justice through legal means instead. The activist expressed his views on X late on July 9, 2024, emphasizing the importance of respecting due process and avoiding vigilante justice.
He wrote, "If someone insults you or tarnishes your reputation, go to court and seek justice. APC trolls insult me and spread numerous falsehoods about me. I have never used the police to illegally arrest or detain anyone, and I never will. Illegally detaining citizens using law enforcement is extremely dangerous."
Mr Macaroni also cautioned against endorsing such misuse of power while clarifying his stance against online bullying. "Those supporting this abuse of power may regret it when they or their loved ones become victims. I do not condone online bullying and harassment. Offenders should face the consequences legally."
"I have experienced victimization myself and understand its mental toll. However, justice should be sought through proper legal channels. Using friends in government to unlawfully detain people may seem advantageous now, but consider the consequences when that power or influence wanes. It could affect you or someone you care about. What kind of society will we have if everyone takes the law into their own hands?"
Mr Macaroni's statements followed social media reports alleging that actress Toyin Abraham used police intervention to apprehend a man and his mother over defamation on X. The actress faced criticism from X users for allegedly leveraging political ties for personal legal actions, prompting responses that were eventually deleted.
The comedian's remarks sparked widespread reactions from his followers and other X users, reflecting on the current issue. One follower commented, "Toyin Abraham reportedly had someone arrested over a tweet. Isn't that a form of oppression?" Mr Macaroni responded, "It's not just a 'mere' tweet if it defames her character. It's a crime punishable by law. My point is that grievances should be addressed in court, not through political connections to bypass legal processes — that's oppression."
If anyone insults you or defames your character, go to court and seek justice.
