Court of Appeal Upholds N5 Million Fine on Daddy Freeze for Adultery

The Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt has upheld the fine imposed on popular Nigerian On-Air Personality, Ifedayo Olarinde, known as Daddy Freeze, for committing adultery. On February 18, 2021, a High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, ordered Daddy Freeze to pay N5 million for committing adultery with Benedicta Elechi. The payment was to be made to Paul Odekina, who was married to Elechi at the time of the affair.

The court awarded N5 million against Ifedayo Olarinde as damages for depriving Paul Odekina of the companionship of his wife and for the injury suffered due to the adultery. The court also dissolved the marriage between Paul and Benedicta because of her adulterous relationship with Daddy Freeze.

Not satisfied with the High Court's judgment, Daddy Freeze appealed the decision. His main arguments were that Odekina did not attempt to serve him personally before applying for substituted service, which he claimed violated Order 7 Rule 2 of the Rules of the Trial Court. He also argued that the service by substituted means, such as by courier, was ineffective as indicated in the affidavit of service, and that the lack of proper service violated the principles of natural justice.

Ladipo Kidnappers: Yul Edochie Denies Friendship with Henry Odenigbo

Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has clarified that he has no relationship with movie producer and CEO of Ason-Rich Movie Production, Henry Odenigbo. This statement comes in response to recent news regarding a police operation in Ladipo Mushin, where some kidnappers were killed during a gunfight. The Lagos police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, had announced the operation but did not disclose the identities of the slain kidnappers.

Following the news, filmmaker and actor Stanley Nwoko, known as Stanley Ontop, posted photos of Henry Odenigbo, alleging that he was the "ringleader" of the kidnap gang killed by the Lagos State Police Command.

In an Instagram video, Edochie addressed the rumors, debunking claims that he was friends with the deceased. The 42-year-old actor explained that the circulated photo of him and Odenigbo was taken in June on a movie set, at the request of the late filmmaker.

"According to the police, the guy is a kidnapper. I've heard stories and noticed that some blogs posted my picture with him, implying he's my friend. So, I want to state that the guy wasn’t my friend. I’ve been in Nollywood for 19 years, going on 20 years. I only saw this guy once when I shot a movie for him a few weeks ago. A director contracted me for a movie and paid me for a job. I even thought it was the director’s movie until I came to the set and met this guy.

"I think he called himself Ason-Rich Henry. He came to me, introduced himself as Ason-Rich Productions, and said his name was Henry. We exchanged pleasantries, I shot the movie, and on the last day of shooting, he came to me and said he was so excited that he finally got to work with me. I think he also played a role in the movie. He asked if he could take a picture with me, and I said okay. We took pictures, and I left for the next set. That was the first time I saw him, and I never saw him again. That’s the picture a lot of people are circulating. I understand people are circulating the picture and saying he’s my friend. He is not my friend. I got to know him as a producer, and I don’t know why people are circulating my picture," Edochie stated.

Odenigbo had produced over ten movies in 2024 and worked with well-known actors, including Edochie, Kelvin Ikeduba, and Eve Esin. Edochie confirmed that he starred in "Sharon's Fate," one of Odenigbo's movies. The producer’s YouTube page indicates that the movie has not yet been released, but on June 11, the deceased shared pictures on his Instagram page of himself, Edochie, and other actors on the movie set.

Skit Maker Zfancy Granted Bail Following Arrest for Disturbing Pranks

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the release of skit maker and prankster, Zion Ubani, popularly known as Zfancy. This follows his arrest by the NPF-National Cybercrime Centre on July 4 in Abuja over prank videos that falsely accused him of serious crimes, including rape.

On Wednesday, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, announced that Zfancy was granted bail with a warning to avoid pranks that could cause public unrest. Adejobi stated that Zfancy was released to the executives of the Practitioners of Content Creation, Skit-Making, and Influencers Guild of Nigeria.

The delegation, led by Tokoni Igoin, Special Assistant to the President on ICT Development and Digital Innovation, facilitated his release. Adejobi also mentioned that the controversial videos were ultimately found to be scripted.

"While encouraging positive creativity among the youthful populace, the NPF urges content creators to responsibly use social media and avoid spreading misinformation that may incite public disorder," he said.

EndSARS: ECOWAS Court Indicts Nigerian Government, Awards Damages to DJ Switch and Others

The Community Court of Justice, ECOWAS, ruled on Wednesday that the Federal Republic of Nigeria violated the human rights of Obianuju Udeh, also known as DJ Switch, and two other #EndSARS protesters. The court found that Nigeria breached Articles 1, 4, 6, 9, 10, and 11 of the African Charter on Human Rights.

The court ordered Nigeria to pay N2 million as compensation for these rights violations and to prosecute the responsible security agents. The government is required to report within six months on the measures taken to implement the judgment.

The applicants, Obianuju Udeh, Perpetual Kamsi, and Dabiraoluwa Adeyinka, claimed that their rights were violated during peaceful protests at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos State on October 20 and 21, 2020. Udeh alleged that soldiers shot at protesters, resulting in deaths and injuries, which she live-streamed. She subsequently received threatening phone calls, forcing her into hiding and eventually seeking asylum. Kamsi, responsible for protesters' welfare, described how soldiers started shooting after a power cut, leading to her hospitalization due to police tear gas. Adeyinka claimed she narrowly escaped being shot, observed soldiers refusing ambulance access, and later witnessed inadequate hospital care for victims. She and her colleagues had to take over the victims' care, facing ongoing threats and surveillance believed to be by the respondent’s agents.

The court dismissed the allegation that the right to life was violated but upheld other claims, stating that Nigeria breached several articles of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. Justice Koroma Mohamed Sengu, who delivered the judgment, highlighted that the respondent must pay each applicant N2 million for the violations and ensure the investigation and prosecution of responsible agents. The court also mandated Nigeria to report within six months on the measures taken to comply with this judgment.

The Nigerian government denied all claims, asserting that the protesters unlawfully assembled at Lekki Toll Gate and that its agents followed strict rules of engagement without shooting or killing protesters. The government argued that the first applicant incited the crowd, the second applicant's support indicated her backing of the protest, and the third applicant intended to escalate violence. The government maintained that the treatment and care of the injured were managed by the Lagos State government and that the applicants failed to provide credible evidence for their claims.
