October 29, 2024 VDM Appeals Court Ruling in Defamation Case Filed by Falana and Falz

VDM Appeals Court Ruling in Defamation Case Filed by Falana and Falz

Social media influencer Martins Otse, popularly known as Verydarkman, has filed an application with the Lagos High Court seeking permission to appeal an October 14, 2024, ruling by Justice Matthias Dawodu. This ruling had ordered Verydarkman to remove allegedly defamatory videos and comments about Senior Advocate of Nigeria Femi Falana and his son, musician Folarin Falana, known as Falz. The controversial statements accused the Falanas of accepting N10 million from crossdresser Idris Okuneye (Bobrisky) to influence a legal outcome.

Justice Dawodu’s ruling also restrained Verydarkman from further posting or sharing defamatory content against the Falanas on his social media platforms while the case proceeds. In his latest application, dated October 18, Verydarkman asked the court to extend the time to seek leave for an appeal, arguing that the original order was based solely on the Falanas’ affidavit and that his constitutional right to appeal requires court approval due to the interlocutory nature of the order.

He contended that a refusal to grant leave to appeal would amount to a miscarriage of justice, stressing the importance of appellate courts in reviewing trial court decisions to uphold judicial integrity. His attorney, Oladimeji Joseph, further supported the motion, highlighting the need for court permission before proceeding with an appeal. Joseph noted that Verydarkman has 14 days from the ruling date to file for this leave and urged the court to grant the request to ensure a fair and thorough legal review of the case.

Baba Ijesha Case: Suspended Actress Nkechi Blessing Apologizes to TAMPAN, Says “Please, Forgive Me”

Suspended Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing recently issued a heartfelt public apology to the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners of Nigeria (TAMPAN) for her past criticism. TAMPAN, the governing body for Yoruba actors and filmmakers in Nigeria, suspended Blessing three years ago following an online dispute with actor Lege Maimi over Baba Ijesha’s alleged child abuse case.

The fallout stemmed from Blessing and fellow actress Iyabo Ojo’s outspoken campaign against Baba Ijesha, which drew criticism from several TAMPAN members, including actors Yomi Fabiyi and Lege Maimi. Amid the controversy, veteran actor Jide Kosoko announced that TAMPAN directors would no longer work with Ojo and Blessing, prompting Blessing to publicly mock the decision.

At the 2024 Celebrities Entertainment Awards in Canada, Blessing apologized to TAMPAN with visible emotion. In a viral video, she said, “I am so sorry for all that I did. I’m begging from the bottom of my heart... I’m being celebrated all over the world because of you. Please, I’m sorry.”

TAMPAN President Mr. Latin accepted her apology, marking a step toward resolution, while actor Odunlade Adekola commended her for the public gesture. Baba Ijesha was sentenced to prison in July 2022 by Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of the Ikeja Special Offences Court after a year-long trial.

Singer Chike Alleges Manipulation in Apple Music Nigeria Chart

Nigerian singer Chike recently claimed that the Apple Music Nigeria charts, particularly the Top 10 and Top 20, are often manipulated. In an appearance on Curiosity Made Me Ask, a show hosted by content creator Bae U Barbie, Chike discussed how artists could pay to boost their positions, potentially distorting the chart's accuracy.

Your Top 10 and Top 20 on Apple Music are rigged... not all the time, but most times,” Chike noted, explaining that while some placements are genuine, many high-ranking songs are pushed up through paid promotion. He acknowledged that in today’s competitive music landscape, visibility is critical, prompting artists to invest heavily in promotion. "If I wanted to reach the top 10, I could tell my team to spend $30,000, and we’d get there. But it wouldn’t be real," he said, emphasizing that this strategy is common among artists with larger promotional budgets.

Chike’s comments have sparked discussion about chart transparency and the pressures artists face to stay visible in a crowded industry.

American Rapper Lil Durk May Face Death Penalty in Alleged Murder-for-Hire Plot

Chicago rapper Lil Durk was arrested on October 24, 2024, just days after being honored with the Keys to the Village of Broadview and Bellwood for his contributions to the communities. His arrest is linked to the murder of rapper Quando Rondo’s cousin, who was allegedly killed in retaliation for the death of Durk’s close associate, rapper King Von, a member of Durk’s Only the Family (OTF) crew.

The indictment claims Lil Durk allegedly offered cash and music opportunities to anyone who would carry out the killing of Quando Rondo, whose real name is Terrell Bowman. In August 2022, a gunman reportedly opened fire on Rondo while he was at a gas station in West Hollywood with his sister and cousin, Saviay’a Robinson. Although Rondo and his sister were unharmed, Robinson, 24, was shot multiple times and died.

Lil Durk, along with five other OTF members, now faces charges of murder-for-hire and the use of a deadly weapon in a homicide, both of which carry potential sentences of life imprisonment or the death penalty. This case puts Lil Durk among prominent American rappers facing severe criminal charges, joining Atlanta rapper Young Thug, who is currently on trial for RICO charges.
