Youtube Shorts Gets 100 Billion Views Per Month

In April 2022, YouTube Shorts, a content form on YouTube that contains short form content sampled from long-form videos, generated over 100 billion views.

The company revealed the information during a press conference that simultaneously marked the company's one-year anniversary in Nigeria.

According to the firm, Shorts is watched by approximately 1.5 billion logged-in visitors each month.

According to the firm, artist and creator channels that uploaded both short and long-form content had higher total watch time and subscriber growth than those who exclusively uploaded long-form content.

Its stated aim was to give everyone a voice, to assist producers in growing their audiences, and to be inspired by new video formats.

"Shorts have become a crucial element of the YouTube experience for our creators and users," said YouTube's Chief Product Officer, Neal Mohan.

“Now being watched by over 1.5B logged in users every month, the product is growing thanks to the creativity of our community. While we’re still at the beginning of our journey with Shorts, we look forward to continuing to innovate the product so our creators can continue to express themselves, connect with their audiences, and increase their reach and revenue opportunities on the platform.”

“For artists, the path to success has never been more demanding, so we’re designing products like Shorts to make YouTube THE place for them to connect with their fans and grow long-term, sustainable music careers.

“We’ve been hard at work innovation and refining the product features our community knows and loves to incorporate this new video format into the broader YouTube experience.”

YouTube’s Global Head of Music, Lyor Cohen, added, “Everybody knows that our mission at YouTube is to become the leading revenue generator for the music industry.

“Money is great, but it’s not enough. Building artist fandom is equally important. We want YouTube to be the place for artists to connect and create meaningful relationships with their fans and grow long-term, sustainable music careers; Shorts, combined with long-form video, is proving to be a critical way to do that.

“It’s our job to make sure that once fans find their life’s soundtrack on Shorts, they are met with prompts that encourage them to dive deeper into an artist’s repertoire. YouTube is the only platform that can bring that experience to reality and we are all in on making it happen.”

Chadwick Boseman Snags Posthumous Emmy Nomination For ‘What If…?’

On Tuesday, July 12, the Chadwick Boseman nomination was announced among other notable personalities in television. The actor's official social media tweeted an appreciative post in response to the unprecedented nomination.

"What an incredible honor! Thank you to the @televisionacad for Chad’s posthumous #Emmys nomination for Outstanding Character Voice-Over for his roll in as T’Challa in the animated series #Whatif…? from @disneyplus and @marvelstudios," the post read.

Prohibit Smoking in BBNaija S7, Group Urges NBC

The Nigeria Tobacco Control Alliance has urged the National Broadcasting Commission to prohibit smoking in the upcoming Big Brother Naija Season 7.

The group said tobacco advertising had persisted in Nigerian movies and digital spaces, despite the ban placed by the National Tobacco Control Act, 2015.

In a press statement signed by its Programme Officer, Chubuike Nwokorie and made available to The PUNCH on Wednesday, the group also urged the Federal Government and all stakeholders to intensify enforcement of the ban on tobacco advertising, promotion, and sponsorship in the country.

The statement partly read, “One of the most notorious violators of the TAPS ban is Smoke Box NG, a tobacco vendor that advertises tobacco products on social media with impunity.

“In 2021, Big Brother Naija, a popular reality TV show, hosted on the GOTV and DSTV platforms, sparked public outrage when its participants flagrantly smoked on live TV.

“This depiction of smoking as glamorous challenged the provisions of the NTC Act, 2015 on on-screen smoking. It also threatened the gains made on the ban on TAPS in Nigeria. When it happened, the tobacco control community called on the National Broadcasting Commission to act immediately.

“This year, as the programme is about to begin its 7th season, we are drawing the attention of NBC to proactively engage the organizers of the show to ensure that there is no repeat of last year’s violations.

“We wish to make it clear that should there be reluctance on the part of the regulators or the organisers to ensure a smoke-free programme, we will explore every available option in the interest of public health. It is important to note that entertainment products set the agenda for many young people because they are the eyes through which they see the world.

“We sound a note of caution to the organisers of BBN and a reminder of their responsibility towards the Nigerian population.

“At this time when Nigerians are hungry for quality leadership, a programme with such national reach must be used to portray high-standing role models for the Nigerian people.

“The National Film and Video Censors Board must live up to its responsibility of ensuring that all videos made and consumed in Nigeria strictly abide by the provisions of the NTC Act as it applies to the regulation of on-screen smoking and must see to the inclusion of text warnings or outright removal of needless on-screen smoking depictions.

“The National Communications Commission and the National Information Technology Development Agency must monitor, and sanction violators of the TAPS ban in the digital space.

“Finally, we charge all agencies of government tasked with the responsibility of enforcing the NTC Act and its Regulations to work together and ensure that the ban on direct and indirect tobacco advertising promotion and sponsorship is comprehensively implemented in Nigeria in line with Article 13 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.”
