YABATECH: Nigeria’s First Tertiary Institution Demands University Status

The institution possesses the infrastructure, as well as the prerequisites, for an update.

The renowned Lagos State Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has requested to be recognized as a university.

The federal polytechnic, Nigeria's first school of higher learning, was established in 1947.

The university possesses the requirements, including the infrastructure, for an update, according to Joe Ejiofor, the deputy registrar.

More than 150 PhDs have been awarded, he revealed, and more academics are pursuing PhD degrees.

“YABATECH has all it takes in all capacity to compare with any university in Nigeria. So, if the government decides otherwise, YABATECH can always fit in”, he told NAN.

Ejiofor listed manpower, resources, equipment, studios as some of the assets that can match those of universities.

The official added that the school is under the supervision of the National Board for Technical Education and awards National Diploma and Higher National Diploma.

In order to build and implement a Security Management Certification Programme, Yaba College of Technology decided to collaborate with a top provider of security solutions in Nigeria in June 2019. The program is aimed for people who want to work as modern security managers, as well as people who are already employed in security or who want to enter the field at the managerial level.

Uduak Inyang-Udoh, Director of Yabatech Consult Limited, said during a recent ceremony organized by the institutions to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that the collaboration will close the knowledge gap in achieving a worldwide security standard.

Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Tajudeen Adolabi Adeola, Olusegun Adejumo, Abayomi Adebayo Barber, Segun Dangote, Kafayat Oluwatoyin, better known as Kaffy, Omoba Jide Kosoko, Ruth Kadiri, and many others are notable YABATECH alumni.

Ondo Rep Offers N50m Scholarship To 1000 Students

The Akoko area of Ondo State's native Mr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, a member of the House of Representatives from the state, has introduced a N50 million scholarship program for 1000 needy children.

The politician, who represents the Akoko North-East/North-West Federal Constituency, said that the goal of the program was to help the nation's poor students who were enrolled in academic schools.

The House Committee on Niger-Delta Affairs Chairman, Tunji-Ojo, said in a statement made available to our reporter on Monday that the action was a part of his efforts to support the educational advancement of his district and the state as a whole.

According to the announcement, impoverished students from the Federal Constituency were eligible to register for the scholarship program, which had started on Monday.

This is in fulfillment of my education support drive, which has seen me facilitate several classroom blocks, computer sets, educational materials, free Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination forms, coaching for 2,000 students, and other notable interventions in the education sector, according to the statement.

“The education support drive is to help reduce the burden of education on the parents and also ensure that no child is denied access to quality education.”

“The registration form is totally free and can be obtained from presidents of students’ bodies in each community in the Federal Constituency. This is to ensure that nobody is denied access to the form.”

July 21, 2022 JAMB Announces 140 As Cut-Off Mark For University Admission

JAMB Announces 140 As Cut-Off Mark For University Admission

The minimal cut-off mark for admissions in the 2022–2023 academic session has been announced by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), heads of tertiary institutions, and other stakeholders in the nation's education sector.

At a Policy Meeting on Admissions chaired by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, in Abuja, the stakeholders announced that the minimum cut-off mark for admission into Nigerian universities would be 140, the polytechnics would require 100, and colleges of education would require 100.

The implication is that every institution has the right to set its own cut-off mark, even up to 220, but no one would be allowed to go below the agreed minimum marks of 100 for colleges of education, 100 for polytechnics, and 140 for universities, according to JAMB's registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, who announced the cut-off after thorough debates and votes by vice-chancellors of universities, rectors of polytechnics, and provosts

It will be recalled that the JAMB registrar revealed that only 378,639 of the 1,761,338 who wrote the 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) scored 200 and above.

Oloyede provided more exam numbers, noting that 378,639 candidates scored higher than 200; 520,596 candidates scored 190 or higher; 704,991 candidates scored 180 or higher; 934,103 candidates scored 170 or higher; and 1,192,057 candidates scored 160 or higher.

The National Universities Commission (NUC), the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and the National Commission for Colleges of Education are three regulatory bodies that have prescribed admission requirements for institutions. The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, urged all institutions to strictly abide by these regulations (NCCE).

Only 378,639 Scored Above 200 In 2022 JAMB

Only 378,693 of the 1,761,338 candidates who took the 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations, according to information provided by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), achieved a score of 200 or above.

At the Board's 2022 policy meeting in Abuja on Thursday, July 21, 2022, JAMB Registrar Professor Ishaq Oloyede said this.

The numbers: Although fewer than 400,000 applicants received scores of 200 or higher, 520,596 applicants received scores of 190 or higher.

Oloyede provided more data for the 2022 UTME, stating that 1,192,057 applicants scored 160 or higher, 934,103 candidates scored 170 or above, and 704,991 candidates scored 180 or above.

He continued by saying that the Board permitted candidates who were awaiting results to take the UTME in 2022.

JAMB allowed awaiting results candidates to register and sit for the 2022 UTME. These candidates can’t be considered for admission on awaiting result status. They must present their O’level results on the board’s portal before the commencement of admissions”, he said.

Why it's important: According to the numbers released by Prof. Oloyede, only 21.5 percent of the candidates received a score of 200 or higher.

Given that the cut-off mark for university entrance, particularly in the country's Federal Universities, is set at 200, this suggests a widespread exam failure.

In 2021, COVID-19 was blamed for the candidates' dismal performance in the UTME.

Prof. Oloyede claims that the COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on how smoothly the academic schedule operated.

Out of the more than a million applicants that took the exam in 2021, only 168, 613 achieved a score over 200.

Although the 2022 performance statistics show an increase over the 2021 outcome, they nonetheless show that the majority of candidates did not perform well in the exam.
