Strike: FG Meets ASUU In Industrial Court Monday

The Federal Government has stated that it will meet with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday at the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) for adjudication regarding the strike's extension.

Dr Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment, stated this on Sunday in Abuja in a letter to the NICN Registrar dated September 8.

Ngige stated this in a statement signed by Olajide Oshundun, the ministry's Head of Press and Public Relations, and made available to journalists.

He stated that the referral mechanism was required due to the lack of talks between the union and the Federal Ministry of Education.

He said that the topic is scheduled for discussion at 9 a.m. on Sept. 12.

”The Federal Government has asked the NICN to inquire into the legality or otherwise of the ongoing prolonged strike by ASUU leadership and members that had continued even after apprehension.

“It asked the court to interpret in its entirety the provisions of Section 18 LFN 2004, especially as it applies to the cessation of strike once a trade dispute is apprehended by the Minister of Labour and Employment and conciliation is ongoing,” he said.

He also said that the NICN are to interpret the provisions of Section 43 of the Trade Dispute Act, Cap T8. LFN 2004, titled “Special Provision with Respect to payment of wages during strikes and lock-outs”.

Ngige said this ”specifically dealing with the rights of employees/workers during the period of any strike or lock-out.

”Can ASUU or any other union that embarked on strike be asking to be paid salaries even with clear provisions of the law.

“Determine whether ASUU members are entitled to emoluments or ‘strike pay’ during their period of strike, which commenced on Feb. 14.

”Moreso, in view of our national law as provided in Section 43 of the TDA and the International Labour Principles on the right to strike as well as the decisions of the ILO Committee on Freedom of Association on the subject,” he said.

Unilorin ASUU Seeks Elders’ Intervention In Ending Strike

The University of Ilorin (Unilorin) branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has urged well-intentioned Nigerian politicians to act quickly to mediate the continuing labor conflict between the union and the Federal Government.

The union's chairman, Prof. Moyosore Ajao, made the request while taking questions from reporters on Monday in Ilorin. He also urged organizations to become involved in the protracted issue.

In the benefit of innocent youngsters and their parents, Ajao claimed he was requesting the interventions in order to put an end to the strike.

In the interest of the country, he declared, it was past time for traditional leaders, elder statesmen, and religious figures from all backgrounds to intervene in the ongoing scandal.

The union's leadership, according to the professor of anatomy, was not opposed to the interventions of people whose opinions would be acknowledged by the federal government.

He pointed out that those eminent men and women could not remain indifferent to the unfortunate situation that had compelled students to be out of their various classes for several months.

Ajao explained that his union was forced into the action by the indifference of their employers who feigned ignorance of the demands of the union prior to and soon after the commencement of the strike.

“Members of the union, like other well-meaning patriots, are equally not happy with the strike and its effects because they are also parents and guardians with children and wards studying in the nation’s ivory towers,” he said.

He added that the decision of the union to embark on the strike was targeted at preserving the nation’s university system, which is currently being afflicted with brain drain and deterioration of enabling infrastructures.

August 29, 2022 BREAKING: ASUU Extends Strike Again

BREAKING: ASUU Extends Strike Again

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has agreed to extend its ongoing strike after a brief but contentious round of deliberations, according to Punch.

The choice was made on Monday, August 29, 2022, following the National Executive Council meeting at the union's headquarters at the University of Abuja.

Early reports on Monday morning indicated that the crucial meeting was taking place on the campus of the University of Abuja, which is home to the ASUU headquarters.

The purpose of today's discussion was to discuss the possibilities of ending the strike or prolonging it, even though some State colleges have already announced their withdrawal from it.

However, the meeting didn't even last two hours before it was announced that the strike would go on.

Recall that the Federal Government persisted on a no-work, no pay policy last week against the academics who were on strike, which infuriated the union executive led by Prof. Emmanuel Osokode.

Since February of this year, ASUU has been on strike in support of, among other things, enhanced welfare and revitalizing public institutions.

Since all attempts by the government to get the union to call off the strike have been successful, one point of discontent for academics is the non-payment of university revitalization funds, which total around N1.1 trillion.

What the government is doing in response to the ASUU strike: According to the administration, not enough money is available to pay the professors.

Representative Dachung Musa Bagos has requested the Federal Government to compensate the Academic Staff Union of Universities with some of the newly recovered Abacha loot, which totals $23,439,724 million (ASUU).

Ahmed Isah, commonly known as Ordinary President, is the host of the reality radio and television talk program Brekete Family Programme. He has started a drive to raise N18 billion for the Academic Staff Union of Universities, or ASUU.

The ASUU president, Osokede, appeared to be offended by the action and expressed his displeasure by saying the union shouldn't be connected to such.

No Arrears, No Resumption, ASUU Dares FG

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has said it would not call off its strike until the salary arrears of its members were paid.

In a statement, the union’s national president, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, explained that the government encouraged the strike to linger because of its provocative indifference.

He said ASUU rejected the government’s offer because it did not follow the collective bargaining agreement.

He asked the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Education, to return to the New Draft Agreement of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Renegotiation Committee whose work spanned a total of five and half years as a demonstration of good faith.

Osodeke also dismissed the government’s claim of paucity of funds, saying it is unacceptable.
