U.S. Mission Announces Availability Of No-Interview Student Visa Renewals

According to the United States Mission in Nigeria, existing students in the United States on an F1 or academic J1 visa may be able to renew their student visa without an interview when they return to Nigeria during the winter break.

This was revealed in a statement released on Wednesday.

According to the mission, to qualify for this procedure, a student must be physically in Nigeria, renewing a student visa that was still valid or had expired within the previous 24 months, and the renewal must be for either: continuing participation in the same major course of study even if at a different institution; or attending the same institution even if in a different major course of study.

It was said that by organizing a no-interview student visa renewal appointment, students would be able to drop off their passports at a DHL site in Lagos on a day and time chosen using the Consulate's online booking system.

“The U.S. Mission in Nigeria is committed to returning your passport to you within two weeks from your appointment date and will prioritise any required follow up interviews.

“To schedule a no-interview student visa renewal appointment go to www.ustraveldocs.com/ng and follow the instructions.”

The mission said that on the day and time of scheduled appointments, the students should visit a designated DHL facility to drop off their application with the following documents:
  1. A printout of the submission letter (printed from www.ustraveldocs.com/ng)
  2. DS-160 completed in the last six months
  3. An approved I-20
  4. A receipt for their I-901 SEVIS fee
  5. The passport containing the expired student visa (if that passport has expired, a current valid passport must be included) and;
  6. A passport photograph taken in the last six months meeting these requirements.

The mission also said that applicants who do not meet the above criteria should visit and schedule a regular appointment at www.ustraveldocs.com/ng, noting that each applicant must meet the qualifications individually.

“For instance, we cannot accept a renewal for a child if the parent is the only one who qualifies under the guidelines. In that case, the child would need to schedule an appointment and come to the Embassy or Consulate for an interview.

“During the rescheduling process, you will be asked questions confirming eligibility for the student renewal program and be provided instructions on how to submit the application through the document delivery center,” the mission said in the statement.

We’ll Not Pay ASUU For Service Not Rendered, FG Insists

The federal government has insisted that members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU will not be paid for work not done.

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, stated this on Wednesday after the Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House in Abuja.

The part payment followed the suspension of ASUU’s eight-month strike, in line with an order by the National Industrial Court for the lecturers to return to work.

Responding to allegations by the National President of ASUU, Professor Emmanuel Osodoke that the part payment was simply a tactic to casualties’ lecturers in the university system, the minister stated that the government held no such plans.

Minister Adamu also denied being unaware of the union’s protest against the withheld salaries.

ASUU Condemns Pro-Rata Salary Payment By FG

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has ruled out embarking on another strike amid the controversial October salary paid to its members.

The union, however, condemned what it called an attempt by the federal government to turn the academics into casual workers through the so-called ‘pro-rata’ payment for 18 days.

ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke stated this after a marathon National Executive Council meeting that started yesterday and ended early this morning.

Professor Osodeke also said it is considering challenging the Federal Government in court as the payment is not only an aberration, but a contravention of all known rules of engagement in any contract of employment for academics the world over.

Although the meeting ended with a resolution not to embark on another strike action, Osodeke appealed for the understanding of Nigerian students, parents and other genuinely concerned individuals and groups in the country.

Human Rights Lawyer and ASUU’s legal representative, Femi Falana asked the federal government to stop provoking ASUU.

Also reacting to this in an interview with Inspiration FM, Social Commentator, Liborous Oshoma said it is a pity that the federal government is going about the so called negotiations this way.
