Kano Govt Suspends Eid Festivities As Fears Of COVID-19 Third Wave Grow

This is contained in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Mr Muhammad Garba, on Monday in Kano.

The Kano State Government has announced the suspension of Eid-el-kabir festivities in the state.

The Federal Government on Saturday put six states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on red alert as part of the preventive measures against a third wave of COVID-19.

The states are Lagos, Oyo, Rivers, Kaduna, Kano and Plateau.

Garba said that only Eid prayers would be performed at mosques in the five Emirates across the state.

“The development was part of measures by Nigeria, like most countries in Africa, presently facing a threat of the COVID-19, after detecting the more transmissible Delta variant,’’ he said.

The commissioner noted that the red alert would allow authorities in the affected states to restrict gatherings to a minimum, particularly the traditional durbar celebrations.

He appealed to the public to observe the COVID-19 safety protocols which include the use of face masks, hand washing, and social distancing during the Eid prayers.

Nigeria To Receive 3.92m Doses Of Astrazeneca Vaccine By July

Nigeria is gearing up for the resumption of vaccination of people for COVID-19 as it expects another shipment of 3.92 million AstraZeneca vaccine to arrive in the country between July and August.

The Executive Director of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr. Faisal Shuaib, said on Tuesday during a media briefing in Abuja that the federal government had resumed vaccination of the first dose in anticipation of the receipt of the next batch of AstraZeneca vaccine.

“We now have information that Nigeria will get 3.92 million doses of Oxford/AstraZeneca by end of July or early August. As we receive additional information on the exact dates in August, we will provide an update regarding timelines and details of this,” he stated.

While working with international partners to confirm the next shipment of vaccines to Nigeria, Shuaib said that the federal government had commenced administering the first dose of the vaccine, which was earlier halted due to shortages.

On the assessment of the impact of AstraZeneca vaccine so far, Shuaib said recent research from Public Health England (PHE) showed that the Indian (Delta) variant B.1.617.2 is 92 per cent susceptible to Oxford/AstraZeneca.

According to him, it is comforting to note that the vaccine used in Nigeria can protect against this variant that caused high morbidity and mortality in India.

“However, it underscores the need for us to ramp up our vaccination to more Nigerians.

“As you all are aware, hesitancy towards the second dose is very tied to the continued misinformation and disinformation about COVID-19 and the vaccination programme globally and locally,” he said.

He urged the media not to relent in bringing to bear on COVID-19, “the sheer patriotism and professional prowess you demonstrated in our collective and successful fight against polio in Nigeria.”

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, says 17,382 persons have received the second dose of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine in the state as at May 31.

He said 12,288 persons received the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine on the reported date.

According to him, 300, 534 persons who received the first jab of the vaccine were yet to get the second shot.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the commissioner had earlier stated that 317,916 persons were inoculated with the first dose of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine.

The state commenced the Phase One of its COVID-19 vaccination programme on March 12.

Abayomi said the administration of the second dose of the vaccine, which began on May 28, was in continuation of the phase one vaccination exercise.

“For anyone to be fully vaccinated, two doses of the Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine are required, with an interval of six to 12 weeks,” he said.

The commissioner noted that the state would need to vaccinate 14 million people, which is 60 per cent of its population, to reach its target to achieve herd immunity.

He said the state was considering several channels, including discussions with the Federal Government and the private sector, to ramp up its vaccination numbers.
