Embattled Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, has reportedly escaped death after aggrieved inmates, who accused him of insincerity in bribe-for-release deals when he was in active service.
Internal papers and authorities, according to Premium Times, indicated the attack took place on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, months after Kyari was remanded following his continuing prosecution for drug-related offenses.
According to an unnamed official, there are around 190 convicts who want Kyari killed, with the majority of them doing time for narcotics offenses.
Following the incident, prison officials are allegedly considering transferring Kyari from the Kuje jail to the custody of the State Security Service (SSS).
Despite collecting payments from the Kuje assailants, Kyari allegedly prosecuted them.
Officials are said to have rescued the troubled senior police officer, who is now being held in a secluded cell "under severe protection where no one sees him for fear of attack or poisoning."
Kyari was also said to have had to pay N200,000 to each of the dissatisfied convicts "to purchase loyalty and quiet."
Despite the deal, according to sources quoted by the newspaper, the offended inmates have continued to threaten Kyari's life.
According to the report, an official referral has been made for Kyari to be transferred out of Kuje to an SSS facility.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Correction Service, Francis Enobore, denied the attack on Kyari.
Enobore was quoted as saying: “I am not aware Abba Kyari paid anybody to secure his safety in prison.”
