A trending video on X shows popular social media personality Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, being escorted off an Amsterdam-bound KLM flight on Thursday night. Earlier, Isaac Fayose, brother of former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, had shared a photo with Bobrisky on the same flight, bound for London, with the caption, “Look who’s on the same flight with me to London, @Bobrisky222.” However, Bobrisky was later removed from the flight by airport officials.
Following the incident, Bobrisky took to Instagram, alleging that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was behind his removal and detention. “Nigerians help me, EFCC just arrested me. I’m badly injured,” he wrote, sharing the news with his followers.
The incident adds to a series of legal and social media controversies surrounding Bobrisky. Recently, on October 22, he was intercepted at the Sème border while allegedly attempting to flee the country. His legal troubles trace back to an April 2024 court ruling, where he was sentenced to six months in prison for naira abuse by the Federal High Court in Lagos.
In addition to these incidents, Bobrisky faces further scrutiny following the release of an audio recording in which he allegedly claimed he was permitted to serve his prison term outside Kirikiri due to “influential connections.” He also allegedly accused EFCC officials of accepting a N15 million bribe to drop money laundering charges against him. EFCC, denying these claims, initiated an investigation into the allegations. EFCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Wilson Uwajaren, confirmed that the agency is thoroughly examining the accusations, and if found false, Bobrisky could face additional charges for misleading the commission.
"There is a provision in the EFCC Act against giving false information, which could lead to a trial," Uwajaren stated, adding that a dedicated panel is handling the investigation and will release findings upon completion.
The case underscores the legal complexities surrounding Bobrisky, who remains under close surveillance by the EFCC amidst the ongoing inquiry.
