Renowned filmmaker Biodun Stephen has called for greater inclusivity in Nollywood, urging the industry to provide platforms for emerging actors to showcase their talent. In a recent interview, Stephen emphasized that art should not be confined to a select group, advocating for diverse casting, particularly on streaming platforms.
“Art shouldn’t be limited to certain people. Opportunities must be created. If new actors can’t break into cinema, they should at least have a shot on platforms like YouTube,” she stated.
Stephen voiced concerns over the trend of recycling well-known actors across cinema, Netflix, and YouTube, which she believes stifles the discovery of fresh talent. “If we keep using the same faces on YouTube, how do we make room for new actors? How will we find the next big star?” she questioned.
She also encouraged audiences to embrace films featuring unfamiliar actors, focusing on the quality of the story and performances rather than star recognition. “Give new faces a chance. Many superstars were born from a single scene, but that can’t happen if audiences don’t watch,” she said.
A celebrated storyteller known for her heartfelt narratives, Biodun Stephen remains a passionate advocate for nurturing talent and expanding opportunities in Nigeria’s film industry.
