Adekuoroye Qualifies For 2024 Olympics

Nigerian female freestyle wrestler Odunayo Adekuoroye has become the country’s first grappler to qualify for next year’s Olympic Games in Paris after winning the bronze medal in women’s 57kg at the ongoing World Championships in Belgrade on Wednesday.

Adekuoroye won her third-place fight against Elvira Kamaloglu, defeating her Turkish opponent 9-5 to secure a spot for Paris.

Paris 2024 will be Adekuoroye’s third Olympics, and she will be gunning for the elusive medal after disappointments in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

The 29-year-old, who missed the African Wrestling Championship earlier this year, was charged for her first world title but lost 6-4 to world No.1 and India’s Sarita Mor in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.

She, however, was able to compete in the repechage on Wednesday, which propelled her to winning her third World Championships bronze medal and a spot at next year’s Olympics.

Meanwhile, 11-time African champion and silver medallist at Tokyo 2020, Blessing Oborududu, narrowly lost to Vusala Parfianovich in the women’s 68kg quarter-finals, just as Esther Kolawole also lost 7-1 to world No. 8 Grace Bullen of Norway in the quarter-finals of the women’s 62kg event.

Oborududu and Kolawole will have a chance to punch their Olympic tickets on Thursday (today) in the repechage if their conquerors progress to the final of their respective events.

Spain Players Agree To End Boycott Ahead Of Nation’s League Games

Victor Francos, Spanish Secretary of State for Sports, has announced that most of the Spain women's team have agreed to end their boycott. This decision was reached at 05:00 local time on Wednesday following over seven hours of deliberations.

Two 23 players initially called up for this month's Nations League matches have withdrawn from the squad.

Francos revealed that the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has committed to implementing "immediate and profound changes."

The boycott was initiated in response to the controversial incident where then RFEF president Luis Rubiales kissed forward Jenni Hermoso following Spain's victory over England in the Women's World Cup final last month. Hermoso stated that the kiss was not consensual, leading to Rubiales' resignation and the dismissal of Spain manager Jorge Vilda.

Spain is scheduled to face Sweden on Friday and Switzerland in the Nations League on Tuesday.

Francos, who leads the Spanish government's national sports agency (CSD), stated, "It is encouraging news to confirm that the team will participate in the next two games with assurance."

The Spain players travelled to the training camp in Valencia on Tuesday in preparation for the upcoming matches.

Manchester City Begin Champions League Defense With Victory Over Red Star Belgrade

In a thrilling Champions League opener, Manchester City showcased their resilience as they came from behind to secure a vital win against Serbian champions Red Star Belgrade. Julian Alvarez emerged as the hero with two second-half goals.

Red Star, European Cup winners in 1991, made a strong bid for a historic victory when Osman Bukari netted in the dying moments of the first half. However, City wasted no time responding, with Alvarez capitalising on Erling Haaland's well-placed return pass. With a deft display of skill, Alvarez deceived Red Star's keeper, Omri Glazer, finding the net from a tight angle at full tilt, levelling the score in less than 90 seconds after the restart.

Unfortunately for Glazer, his outstanding performance was marred 13 minutes later when he attempted to punch away Alvarez's free-kick, only to make the faintest contact with the ball, inadvertently guiding it into the far corner.

Rodri, whose last European goal secured the trophy against Inter Milan in June, continued his impactful run by netting City's third. Unchecked as he ventured into the Red Star box, the Spanish midfielder expertly guided a precise shot into the bottom corner, taking City one step closer to the season's final at Wembley.

By the final whistle, the hosts had demonstrated their dominance with an impressive 77% possession and an astounding 37 shots compared to Red Star's three. This hard-fought victory underscored Manchester City's determination to defend their Champions League title.

Nine-Man Celtic Lose To Feyenoord In Chaotic Opener

Celtic's pursuit of a rare Champions League away victory suffered a setback. They faced two red cards in a second-half unravelling, ultimately granting top-seeded Feyenoord an opening group stage triumph.

The evening commenced with high hopes, with Brendan Rodgers' squad showing early promise in their quest for their first away win in the competition since their victory over Anderlecht in 2017.

However, it concluded in disappointment with another painful European defeat, leaving them at the bottom of the group standings after Lazio and Atletico Madrid played a 1-1 draw in Rome.

Following a poised and composed first half, things worsened when a long-range Calvin Stengs free-kick breached the defensive wall and eluded Joe Hart. Both the goalkeeper and the defensive wall could have performed better, and Celtic struggled to regain their footing.

The goal bolstered the Dutch champions, who had been struggling until that point, and they capitalised on Celtic's unravelling performance in the second half. Gustaf Lagerbielke conceded a penalty for a tug in the box on Igor Paixao and received a second yellow card. However, Hart provided a glimmer of hope with an outstanding save from Paixao's spot-kick.

The challenge became insurmountable when substitute Odin Thiago Holm careened into a tackle, resulting in a straight red card. Alireza Jahanbakhsh then secured Feyenoord's victory after being granted ample time and space to finish emphatically.

The outcome was well-deserved for the Dutch side, with additional efforts ruled out on either side of the goal as Celtic narrowly held on. Ultimately, they escaped without a more significant loss.

Next up, Lazio visits Glasgow, presenting a formidable challenge that now appears even more daunting.
