Nigeria Vs Cote d’Ivoire: Super Eagles To Face Make-Or-Mar Clash At 2023 AFCON

At 6 p.m. WAT today, the Super Eagles will gain further insight into their prospects of securing a fourth African Cup of Nations title.

Jose Peseiro’s squad encountered a 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea in their inaugural match last Sunday, leaving fans and pundits disappointed considering Nigeria's potential to overcome the Central African opponents. Unfortunately, a combination of injuries and poor finishing resulted in the Eagles earning only one point.

This Thursday evening, they face a formidable challenge against the host nation. The Ivorians won their opening fixture 2-0 against Guinea-Bissau and aim to secure a second victory to advance to the knockout stages. Sebastien Haller was absent in the game against Guinea-Bissau due to an ankle injury, while Brighton’s Simon Adingra missed out on it due to a muscle issue. The availability of these key attackers against Nigeria remains uncertain.

Jose Peseiro has confirmed Alhassan Yusuf's unavailability for the match, as he limped off in the previous encounter with Equatorial Guinea. Despite this setback, Peseiro still has viable options, with Kelechi Iheanacho in good form and Terem Moffi settled in the team.

Backed by a passionate home crowd, Jean-Louis Gasset’s Ivorian side poses a significant challenge for Nigeria. Overcoming this hurdle is imperative for the Super Eagles if they harbor aspirations of reclaiming continental glory.

Mourinho Breaks Silence Following AS Roma Dismissal

In the aftermath of his termination as AS Roma manager on Tuesday morning, Jose Mourinho has spoken out for the first time.

The decision to part ways with the Portuguese tactician came with AS Roma languishing in ninth place in the Serie A table. This position prompted the club to cut ties, despite Mourinho's initial contract running until the end of the season.

On his Instagram page, Mourinho shared a succinct ten-word statement that encapsulated his experience: "Sweat, blood, tears, joy, sadness, love, brothers, history, heart, eternity." Accompanying this statement was a video reel showcasing the highs and lows of his tenure at the club.

Emotions were palpable as Mourinho bid farewell to Roma's training base, Trigoria. Visibly moved, the former Chelsea manager nearly shed tears as fans chanted his name, attempting to capture a final selfie with their departing coach.

Mourinho's attachment to Roma is evident, and his emotional response is perhaps unsurprising. Throughout his managerial career, he has often emphasized his unique connection with Roma, unlike any experience at his previous clubs, such as Real Madrid. The departure marks the end of an era for Mourinho and AS Roma, with emotions running high as they part ways.

‘Win AFCON And I’m Done!’ Osimhen Dreams Of Triumph With Nigeria

Victor Osimhen, who clinched the Serie A title with Napoli and secured the African Footballer of the Year title in 2023, now sets his sights on lifting the Cup of Nations with Nigeria, believing it could surpass all his achievements.

The 25-year-old striker expressed his anticipation while speaking with AFP in Abidjan, where the Super Eagles are gearing up to face Ivory Coast in their second group game at the AFCON on Thursday.

Reflecting on his accomplishments with Napoli, including scoring 26 goals last season to secure their first Scudetto since 1990, Osimhen acknowledged the historical significance but emphasized the unique importance of winning the AFCON. He admitted, “I have done that with Napoli; I have made history, but no matter what I do, no matter how many goals I have scored, to be able to win the AFCON, I would go a long way in my life but probably when I do that I am done.”

Osimhen, the focal point of attention in the Nigerian squad, assured that he could handle the pressure, citing his lifelong habit of aiming high. Speaking from the Nigerian team hotel overlooking Abidjan’s Cocody Bay, he asserted, “I am the kind of person who doesn’t fold under pressure. As the pressure comes, I take it into my head to try to give my best and do well for myself.”

Acknowledging the dreams of every young African player, Osimhen expressed gratitude for winning the African Player of the Year award, emphasising the hard work, sweat, and tears that went into achieving the accolade. Despite the attention and expectations, Osimhen appeared relaxed, having just concluded an interview with Emmanuel Adebayor, Togo's 2008 African Footballer of the Year.

AFCON 2023: Super Eagles Lack Team Work – Efe Ambrose

Former Nigerian international Efe Ambrose has revealed that the Super Eagles lack teamwork in the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ambrose made this assertion against the backdrop of Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea in their group A opening game on Sunday.

In an interview, Ambrose noted that individual talents without proper teamwork won’t help Nigeria at the tournament.

“You have to play first as a team; it is not about individuals.

"I think that is what we lack right now—that team, that togetherness.

“I don’t think it is not there, but it is not up to where it should be.

“Individuals will have the talent; they have everything, but it is about how to assemble the right players with quality together, to work together as one.”
