NFF to Appoint Foreign Technical Adviser for Super Eagles, Issues Apology to Nigerians

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced plans to hire a foreign technical adviser for the Super Eagles following the team's poor performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Nigeria has not secured a win in any of their four qualification matches, including a surprising defeat to the Benin Republic, leading to widespread calls from fans for the dismissal of current coach Finidi George.

In a statement released on Thursday after a recent meeting, the NFF expressed its regret over the team's recent performances and assured fans that the new appointment would be made "in the coming weeks."

“The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation held a meeting on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, in a hybrid mode to deliberate on important issues in Nigerian football and resolve them as follows:

“The Executive Committee wholeheartedly apologizes to Nigerians for the dismal output and subsequent poor results of the Senior Men National Team, Super Eagles, in four out of 10 matches in the ongoing qualification series for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals. The committee pledged to work diligently and implement necessary measures to ensure a better-prepared squad for the AFCON 2025 qualifiers in September this year and the resumption of the World Cup qualifiers in March 2025,” the NFF said.

“Further to this, the Executive Committee resolved to employ an expatriate technical adviser for the Super Eagles in the coming weeks, ahead of the AFCON qualifiers and the remaining FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.”

The future role of Finidi George with the Super Eagles remains unclear. The NFF also noted their dissatisfaction with the lackluster attitude of some players toward national duties and decided to enhance their scouting program to find talented Nigerian-eligible players worldwide who can significantly contribute to the team.

In addition, the NFF committed to supporting the Super Falcons as they prepare for the Olympics in France, scheduled from July 24 to August 11.

Fonseca Appointed as AC Milan’s New Coach

Paulo Fonseca, former coach of Roma, is set to make a return to Italy as the new head coach of AC Milan, announced the Serie A runners-up on Thursday. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, representing the club's owner, confirmed the appointment at a press conference.

"We have chosen Paulo Fonseca as Milan's new coach," Ibrahimovic stated. Fonseca, 51 years old, has inked a three-year contract with the club after his tenure at French side Lille since 2022.

Fonseca takes over from Stefano Pioli, who was dismissed after the 2023-24 season after five seasons in charge. Ibrahimovic emphasized the club's meticulous assessment of Fonseca's coaching achievements and match preparation.

"We expect him to bring his distinctive style of play, known for its attacking nature, to our team and players. After five years, we wanted a fresh approach, with full respect to Stefano Pioli," Ibrahimovic remarked.

Born in Nampula, Mozambique in 1973, Fonseca began his coaching career in Portugal, managing clubs like Pacos de Ferreira, Porto, and Braga. He then spent three successful years at Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine, securing seven trophies with a record of 103 wins in 139 matches.

Fonseca moved to Roma in 2019, guiding them to fifth and seventh-place finishes in Serie A before his stint at Lille, where he achieved fifth and fourth in Ligue 1, ensuring European qualification in both seasons.

AC Milan endured a season without trophies, having last won the league title in 2022. They finished significantly behind city rivals Inter in Serie A and were eliminated from the Champions League group stage, finishing third behind Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain. They also exited the Europa League quarter-finals to AS Roma.

The announcement of Fonseca's appointment marks the second major managerial change in Italy in as many days, following Juventus naming Thiago Motta as successor to Massimiliano Allegri, who was sacked last month.

Enyimba Fined N10m for Game Disruption Against Rangers

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has awarded Rangers three points and three goals following the abandoned Oriental derby against Enyimba. The match, part of the NPFL's matchday 35 fixtures, was halted in added time after a controversial penalty was awarded to the Rangers at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu.

Enyimba players protested the decision, leading to confrontations with the match officials, while fans invaded the pitch, causing further disruption. As a result, Enyimba has been fined N10 million for failing to control their players, disrupting the NPFL live broadcast, and causing the match to be discontinued.

Additionally, three Enyimba players—Eze Ekwutoziam, Chibuike Nwaiwu, and Akanni Elijah—are under investigation for potential further sanctions.

The NPFL's letter to Enyimba stated, “An order forfeiting 3 points and three goals in favor of your opponent for refusing to allow the penalty awarded in favor of your opponents to be taken, thereby disrupting the match and bringing the game to disrepute.”

Enyimba is also required to identify and produce for further investigation other players and officials involved in the disruptive conduct, particularly against the match officials. This includes the aforementioned players Eze Ekwutoziam, Chibuike Nwaiwu, and Akanni Elijah.

Furthermore, Rangers have been charged with "over-ticketing, which led to overcrowding" and failing to provide adequate security and crowd control measures during the match. As a result, Rangers have been fined a cumulative N5 million for these breaches.

June 11, 2024 Sports Minister Summons NFF to Address World Cup Series Poor Results

Sports Minister Summons NFF to Address World Cup Series Poor Results

The Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, has called for a comprehensive technical report from the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) following the Super Eagles’ disappointing performance during the June FIFA window.

The Super Eagles secured only one point from a possible six, drawing 1-1 with South Africa in Uyo and losing 2-1 to the Benin Republic in Abidjan in their third and fourth games of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying series. This leaves the team with just three points from a possible twelve in their quest to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Minister Enoh expressed his dissatisfaction with the outcomes, especially given the substantial support the NFF has received from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and the positive working relationship between the Ministry and the NFF.

“The recent results are unacceptable,” Senator Enoh stated. “Despite the immense support from President Tinubu and the high expectations of Nigerian football fans, the Super Eagles have underperformed. The NFF must provide a comprehensive technical report explaining the reasons behind this poor showing and why there should not be consequences for the disappointment caused to both the government and the general Nigerian populace.”

He emphasized that Nigerian football fans demand and deserve answers and accountability from the NFF. “Our supporters are passionate and devoted. They deserve an explanation for why our national team has not been performing to the expected standards since the last AFCON,” he added.
