Confed Cup: Enyimba, Rangers get group stage foes

Nigeria’s representatives in the CAF Confederation Cup, Enyimba and Enugu Rangers, have been drawn in Group A and Group D of Africa’s second-tier club competition.

The 2019/20 group stage draw of the tournament was conducted on Tuesday at CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.

Former African champions Enyimba will lock horns with West Africa counterparts San Pedro (Ivory Coast), Algeria’s Paradou and Morocco’s Hassania Agadir in Group D.

Rangers battle Egypt’s Al MAsry and newcomers Pyramids, as well as Mauritanian debutants Noadhibou in Group A.

Group B will see a western derby between Mali’s Djoliba and Guinea’s Horoya, while South Africa’s Bidvest Wits and Libya’s El Nasr complete the pool.

Last season’s finalists RS Berkane of Morocco head Group C with DR Congo’s Motema Pembe, Zambia’s Zanaco and Benin debutants ESAE.

Group stage matches will commence on December 1, with the top two sides in each group qualifying to the knockout round.

AFCON qualifier: Rohr, Musa target win against tricky Squirrels

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr and Captain Ahmed Musa say the national team are prepared for a tough game in their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Benin Republic.

Nigeria and Benin will meet in their Group L opener of the 2021 AFCON qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Wednesday (today).

According to Musa, the players have resolved to ensure that Nigeria grab three points in their match against Benin

He said, “We don’t have a choice. We have to play. Our last two games were good. We will only put our attention in this game the way we did in the friendlies.

“We all know that we have to win the first game. We all know that this is important. We’ll talk to ourselves to ensure that we go out to show what we have.”

Benin coach Michel Dussuyer, said his team were eyeing a positive result in Uyo.

U-23 AFCON: Nigeria beat Zambia, revive Olympics hope

Nigeria defeated Zambia 3 – 1 in their Group B match day two of the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday at the Al Salam Stadium, Cairo, Egypt.

 Patson Daka put Zambia ahead in the 12th minute before Orji Okonkwo’s 16th minute equaliser.

 A superb free-kick by Kelechi Nwakali gave Nigeria the lead in the 65th minute and Taiwo Awoniyi scored the third goal in additional time.

 After the win on Tuesday, Nigeria now place second in Group B with three points.

 The U-23 side lost their opening match to Ivory Coast 1 – 0 on Saturday.

 South Africa now top Group B with four points after securing a draw against Zambia and defeating Ivory Coast 1-0.

Akpeyi keeps fifth clean sheet in South Africa

Daniel Akpeyi kept his fourth successive clean sheet of the season in the Absa Premiership clash for Kaizer Chiefs, who defeated relegation-threatened Chippa United 2-0 at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Wednesday.

The win stretched the Amakhosi’s lead at the top of the log to seven points ahead of second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns who have a game in hand.

Kaizer Chiefs have 25 points from 10 games while Sundowns have 18 points from nine games.

The 33-year-old had previously kept clean sheets against Black Leopards, Baroka FC, Golden Arrows and  Mamelodi Sundowns so far this season in the PSL.

The game was Akpeyi’s 16th since he arrived from Chippa United and he has conceded 13 goals.
