Flying Eagles beat South Africa 2-1 to top Group A

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles on Tuesday defeated South Africa 2-1 at the ongoing 12th African Games to secure their first three points.

In the game played at the FAR Sports Complex in Rabat, goals by Collins Sor and Ahmed Ghali ensured Nigeria went top of Group A of the men’s football event at the on-going competition.

Coach Paul Aigbogun made three changes to the lineup that drew 1-1 with Burkina Faso with Adesina Gata coming in for Success Makanjuola, while Liameed Quadri took the place of Samuel Nnoshiri and Mathew Yakubu replaced a crocked Detan Ogundare in goal.

Nigeria started brightly and could have taken the lead but for a plethora of missed chances notably by Sor, Ghali and Saeed Jibril. Sor eventually broke the deadlock in the 27th minute after cooly finishing Saeed Jibril’s pass.

South Africa equalised through Ofentse Mashiane who found space in the Flying Eagles defence to equalise in the 55th minute.

Nigeria coach Aigbogun brought on Success Makanjuola and Chinonso Emeka for Saeed Jibril and Collins Sor and this helped increase the tempo in the Nigeria attack which resulted in the winning goal. Ibrahim Abubakar found space to run at the South African defence and whip in a cross which was met by Ahmad Ghali for his second of the competition and the winner for Nigeria.

The Flying Eagles top the group with four points and will now play hosts Morocco in their last group game on Friday in Rabat

August 21, 2019 Serie A coaching shuffle gives Ancelotti’s Napoli hope of toppling Juventus

Serie A coaching shuffle gives Ancelotti’s Napoli hope of toppling Juventus

As the sole survivor of a coaching shuffle among the leading challengers, Carlo Ancelotti could have the best chance to end Napoli’s 30-year wait for the Serie A title.

Yet Antonio Conte’s arrival at Inter Milan has also raised expectations of an end to Juventus’s long domination in the season that kicks off on Saturday.

Serie A runners-up Napoli have not held the Scudetto aloft since Argentine legend Diego Maradona inspired them to their only titles in 1987 and 1990.

Ancelotti’s campaign begins in Fiorentina on Saturday, after Juventus, now coached by Maurizio Sarri, open their quest for a ninth consecutive title in Parma.R

Chinese-owned Inter Milan have also changed coaches with former Juventus and Chelsea boss Conte back home in Italy. Marco Giampaolo takes over at AC Milan and Paulo Fonseca at Roma.

Sarri came close two years ago when he guided Napoli to runners-up spot, just four points behind Juventus, before moving to Chelsea.

At 60, Sarri returns to Italy to coach Juventus as the champions look for a new direction despite five trophy-laden seasons under Massimiliano Allegri.

The decision by Napoli-native Sarri to move north has hurt in his home town.

“For us Neapolitans, that was a betrayal,” said captain Lorenzo Insigne.

“Now we have to try to beat him at all costs.”

Ancelotti embarks on the second year of his three-year contract and wants silverware this campaign.

The 60-year-old has won titles in Europe’s five biggest leagues. His Serie A title came with AC Milan back in 2004.

He arrived in Naples boasting three Champions League trophies from his spells with Milan and Real Madrid, and a Premier League title from his two-year tenure at Chelsea.

The veteran coach insists he has learned from his “transitional” first season.

“We drew back the arrow, now we are ready to fire,” he warned.

Ancelotti has bolstered in all areas with the arrival of defender Kostas Manolas, midfielder Elif Elmas and winger Hirving Lozano.

Ukraine friendly: Injury knocks out Ebuehi

Super Eagles may be without Tyronne Ebuehi for their international friendly against Ukraine after the young defender picked up an injury during a training with his club Benfica last week.

Ebuehi

Reports in Portugal suggest that it will take Ebuehi six weeks to fully recover from the muscle injury which effectively rules him out of the friendly billed for September 10 in Kiev.

Ebuehi’s highly promising career has been slowed down since he joined Benfica from Dutch side ADO Den Haag before the start of last season.

He spent the whole of last season nursing a cruciate ligament injury he copped in the Portuguese side’s training session.

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has become the third player in a week to have racist abuse directed at him on social media following a penalty miss.

France player Pogba, 26, had a second-half penalty saved during united’s one all draw with wolves on Monday.

On Sunday, Reading striker Yakou Meite called out racist abuse sent via social media after his spot-kick was saved.

Last week, Chelsea condemned ‘abhorrent posts’ aimed at Tammy Abraham after his Super Cup final miss against Liverpool.

Blues boss Frank Lampard said he was disgusted by the abuse aimed at the 21-year-old England forward and suggested social media companies must do more to stop players being targeted.

Ivory Coast forward Meite, 23, came on as a substitute against Cardiff and missed a 91st-minute penalty.

Others fans quickly condemned the tweets containing racist abuse that were sent to Pogba – who won the penalty he then missed – shortly after full-time at Molineux on Monday.

Some tweets were later deleted while several accounts appeared to have been taken down.

Twitter’s terms and conditions say it “takes action against behaviour that targets individuals with hateful conduct”.

In July, anti-racism charity Kick It Out produced a report that showed reports of racist abuse increased by 43% last season, with 274 cases compared with 192 the previous season.
