August 23, 2019 FedEx Cup: Rory McIlroy contends at Tour Championship as Justin Thomas sees lead cut

FedEx Cup: Rory McIlroy contends at Tour Championship as Justin Thomas sees lead cut

Rory McIlroy carded a superb round of 66 to move within one shot of the lead at the season-ending Tour Championship.

The Northern Irishman began round one five shots off the lead as part of a staggered starting system derived from the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup points list.

McIlroy, 30, raised concern with the scoring system but went on to shoot four birdies in a four under par round.

He moved to nine under par overall, a shot behind co-leaders Justin Thomas, Brooks Koepka and Xander Schauffele.

Only the top 30 on the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup points list qualify for the Tour Championship and their starting scores work on a sliding scale down to the players in 26th to 30th, who begin on level par.

The eventual winner will pick up a prize of $15m (£12.2m) and McIlroy would have shared the overnight lead had he converted an eight-foot birdie putt on the last.

“I got off to a decent start. To play the back nine in three under and get in with a decent score is very nice,” he told Sky Sports.

“I would have liked to have birdied the last but I’m right there with three rounds to go. If I can replicate this round of golf three more times I think I’ll have a good chance.”

Thomas began the day at 10 under to hold a two-shot advantage on the field as a result of his standing in the FedEx Cup points list built throughout the season.

But the American only navigated Atlanta’s East Lake Golf Club course in level par – including a double bogey when he found water on the par-three 15th – to lose his advantage.

World number one Koepka was three under for his round but it was Schauffele’s bogey-free round of six under that caught the eye most to complete a trio of Americans at the top of the leaderboard.

England’s Paul Casey moved from his starting position at two under to end day one on six under par as three birdies on the back nine helped him to a share of eighth place.

Christian Coleman under investigation for three alleged missed drugs tests

American sprinter Christian Coleman is under investigation over concerns he may have missed three drugs tests, BBC Sport has been told.

If found guilty he would face an automatic one-year ban and would miss the World Championships in Qatar and the Olympic Games in Tokyo next year.

He is alleged to have had three possible failures under the ‘whereabouts’ system in the last year.

Coleman is understood to be contesting at least one of those cases.

Neither athletics’ governing body the IAAF, the World Anti-Doping Agency, the US Anti-Doping Agency nor the Athletics Integrity Unit has commented on the situation, which was first reported

BBC Sport has approached Coleman for comment.

Coleman won the US National Championships last month in a time of 9.99 seconds, having already set the fastest time of the year so far – 9.81secs in the Diamond League meeting at Stanford, California in June.

The 23-year-old won the silver medal at the 2017 World Championships in London behind fellow American Justin Gatlin and has a personal best of 9.79secs, making him the seventh fastest man in history.

He also set a new world record for the 60m when he claimed gold at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham last year and was talked about as a new superstar sprinter in the post-Usain Bolt era.

However he pulled out of a Diamond League event in Birmingham last Friday.

Under the ‘whereabouts’ system, athletes must let officials know where they will be for one hour every day as well as details of overnight accommodation and training.

Former Great Britain 400m Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu received a year’s ban in 2006 for three failures under the ‘whereabouts’ system for three missed tests.

However, cyclist Lizzie Deignan won a successful appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in 2016, which allowed her to compete at the Rio Olympics and prevented a two-year ban after she missed three out-of-competition tests in a 12-month period. One of those tests was later declared void.
