No margin for errors against Ivory Coast –Nwora

D’Tigers head coach, Alex Nwora, has stated that there would be no margin for errors when his side face their West African rivals, Ivory Coast, in Friday’s classification match in Guangzhou.

Nwora’s side are bidding to pick an automatic qualification ticket to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo after failing to advance from Group B.

D’Tigers, who have a better points deficit compared to the other four African teams, must beat Ivory Coast and hosts China to qualify for the Olympics.

“The team has continued to improve and we hope to step it up on Friday (today),” Nwora told a media conference on Thursday.

“Tunisia, Senegal, Angola and Ivory Coast will all be desperate to get the Olympic ticket. So we must get our acts right and get the job done.”

Nigeria defeated Ivory Coast in Lagos 84-73 during the World Cup qualifiers but lost 72-46 in Abidjan.

“We have played each other in the past but this is different. The stakes are now high and we are all aware of that. All the games we played in the past will count for nothing at this stage,” Nwora added.

“The boys are fully aware of what is at stake and the need to continue their winning run.

Oshoala, Nnadozie make Goal’s top five women’s list

Super Falcons players Asisat Oshoala and Chiamaka Nnadozie made the African Women’s Player list in August.
This list, which was released by Goal on Thursday, also had three other women players.
Others who made the list are young Malawi sensation, Temwa Chawinga; Cameroonian Ajara Nchout, and Shepolopolo forward, Rachel Nachula.
Oshoala is a three-time African Women’s Footballer of the Year. She scored nine goals in five pre-season games for Barcelona, including a 4-0 Copa Catalunya win over Espanyol in Palamos, where she celebrated her first silverware in Spain.
On her part, 18-year-old Nnadozie saved three times from the spot as Nigeria came from behind to pip Cameroon on penalties to win the African Games for the first time in 12 years.
The 2019 Women’s World Cup breakout star followed on from her outstanding showing in France with heroic goalkeeping in Nigeria’s African Games triumph in Morocco.
Apart from making the women’s list, Nnadozie made the African team of the month.

Serena to meet Andreescu in US Open final

Serena Williams will face Canadian teenager Bianca Andreescu for the US Open title as the American set herself up for another attempt to clinch a record-equaling 24th Grand Slam singles title.

Williams, who turns 38 this month, cruised into a 10th US Open final Thursday by brushing aside fifth seed Elina Svitolina 6-3, 6-1, earning her 101st win at the tournament to draw level with Chris Evert for the most in history.

Williams is seeking to match Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 major titles and will play 19-year-old Andreescu, who defeated Belinda Bencic 7-6 (7/3), 7-5, on Saturday in her bid for a record seventh US Open triumph.

“To be in yet another final, it seems honestly crazy. But I don’t really expect too much less,” said Williams, who is through to her 33rd major final.
