Arsenal Lose David Luiz Red Card Appeal But Southampton’s Bednarek Sees Ban Overturned

Arsenal have lost their appeal to overturn David Luiz's red card against Wolves - but a ban for Southampton's Jan Bednarek has been rescinded.

Gunners centre-back Luiz clipped Willian Jose's heel in the box in a 2-1 defeat at 2-1 defeat at Wolves, while Bednarek was adjudged to have fouled Anthony Martial in Saints' loss at Manchester United.

An Arsenal statement said the club were 'disappointed' with the appeal result.

Defender Bednarek will now be available for Saturday's trip to Newcastle.

The Gunners were 1-0 ahead when Luiz was judged to have fouled Jose and, because there was no attempt to play the ball the defender was dismissed and Ruben Neves scored the resulting penalty.

Craig Pawson was the referee in charge - and following a video assistant referee check the decision remained, although Pawson was not asked to review the incident on the pitch side monitor.

Luiz, 33, will now miss Arsenal's Premier League game at Aston Villa on Saturday.

Nigeria’s Samuel Chukwueze Of Villarreal Undergoes Successful Surgery

Villarreal and Super Eagles winger, Samuel Chukwueze has undergone successful surgery after traveling to Munich, Germany for the medical procedure.

Brighton Stun Lacklustre Liverpool At Home

Liverpool’s title ambitions were further dented as Brighton made it back-to-back defeats at Anfield for Jurgen Klopp's team in a 1-0 victory.

Just as the defending champions looked to have got back to their relentless selves with away wins at Tottenham and West Ham, they were back in ponderous mood as Steven Alzate's scrappy winner was enough for brilliant Brighton.

Graham Potter's side were anything but scrappy in their performance levels, playing confidently and bravely in attack while defending with great cohesion at the back.

After going 68 games unbeaten at home, Liverpool, who were missing Alisson through illness, have now suffered straight defeats to Burnley and Brighton and have not scored in the last 348 minutes of action at Anfield. They had just one shot on target against the Seagulls in a toothless attacking showing.

The defeat leaves Liverpool seven points off league leaders Manchester City ahead of Sunday's meeting between the two teams.

Ronaldo Double Earns Juventus First Leg Advantage In Coppa Italia

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Juventus came from behind to win the first leg of their Coppa Italia semi-final at Inter Milan.

Argentine forward Lautaro Martinez had put Inter in front, steering a shot past Juve goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon on his 1,100th senior appearance.

However, Ashley Young's foul on Juan Cuadrado allowed Ronaldo to level with a penalty.

The Portuguese forward then capitalised on a defensive mistake for his second.

That rounded off the scoring in a bad-tempered encounter, which saw nine players booked as Andrea Pirlo's side earned revenge for their 2-0 Serie A defeat against Inter in January.

Juventus, 13-time winners of the competition, host the second leg in Turin on Tuesday, 9 February.
