Fraud: Again NFF officials absent in court

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday frowned at the refusal of four officials of the Nigeria Football Federation to appear in court for alleged $8.4m dollars and N4bn  fraud case.

News Agency of Nigeria reports that Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu had on July 1, issued a warrant of arrest for the four men following their repeated refusal to appear in court to answer to the fraud charges against them.

The Federal Government had through the Special Presidential Investigation Panel on the Recovery of Public Property charged them with alleged misappropriation of $8.4m and N4bn belonging to the NFF.

The five officials are NFF President, Amaju Pinnick; NFF Secretary, Sunusi Mohammed; the 1st Vice-President, Seyi Akinwumi; the 2nd Vice-President, Shehu Dikko and an Executive member, Yusuff Fresh, as the 1st to 5th respondents respectively.

Pinnick was exempted from the ordered arrest due to his official roles as a member of the Confederation of African Football’s organising committee at the African Cup of Nation in Egypt.

Justice Ojukwu said their duty was to be in court when ordered as the charges against them before the court had not been cancelled.

“Nobody is bigger than the law,” she said.

Counsel to the defendants, Mohammed Katu, said the respondents were absent because the president had instructed that the Attorney General of the Federation took over the case from the office of Special Presidential Investigation Panel.

He said that the AGF had earlier called the attention of the respondents to his office and in view of the recent development he believed the AGF would do justice to prosecute the matter.

Justice Ojukwu said that the defendants had no reason to appear before any agency thereby constituting a parallel hearing in disobedience to the court.

Egyptian votes void because of capital letters -FIFA

Two votes for Mohamed Salah in the Best FIFA men’s player award were not counted because signatures were in capital letters, says FIFA.

The Egyptian Football Association said acting Egypt coach Shawky Gharib and Captain Ahmed Elmohamady voted for Liverpool forward Salah.

FIFA said, “The signatures on the voting forms were in capital letters and thus seemed not valid.”

The forms also lacked a mandatory signature by the EFA general secretary.

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi won the award on Monday ahead of Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk.

Since the awards ceremony Salah has removed “Egypt” from his Twitter profile, which now reads, “Footballer for Liverpool FC.”

He also posted a tweet which translates as, “Whatever they do to try to change my love for Egypt, they will not succeed.”

Egyptian Football Association president Amr El-Ganainy said he talked with Salah. He said, “I talked with Salah explained to him it was an administrative mistake.”

Nicaragua captain Juan Barrera called into question the authenticity of his country’s votes in the awards as he said he did not submit any votes.

FIFA’s records show that Barrera voted for Lionel Messi as best player and Liverpool’s Jürgen Klopp as best manager.

“I did not vote in the awards #TheBest2019 any information about my vote is false,” 30-year-old midfielder Barrera tweeted.

FIFA said it has asked the Nicaraguan Football Federation to investigate the matter after receiving “votes signed by the player”.
