Boxer Day dies from brain injuries

American boxer Patrick Day died Wednesday after suffering a serious brain injury during his knockout defeat to Charles Conwell last weekend, promoter Lou DiBella said in a statement.

The 27-year-old super welterweight had undergone emergency surgery after being knocked out by Conwell on Saturday at Chicago’s Wintrust Arena.

“On behalf of Patrick’s family, team, and those closest to him, we are grateful for the prayers, expressions of support and outpouring of love for Pat that have been so obvious since his injury,” DiBella said.

Day, who had been in a coma following surgery at Northwestern Memorial hospital, died surrounded by family and friends.

The American fighter had been carried unconscious from the ring on a stretcher on Saturday following his 10th round knockout.

Clasico concerns for Real Madrid as Modric, Bale sit out training

Real Madrid face an anxious wait to see if Luka Modric and Gareth Bale will be fit for next week’s Clasico against Barcelona after both players missed training on Tuesday.

Modric and Bale each did gym work indoors as they attempted to recover from injuries sustained playing in the Euro 2020 qualifier between Croatia and Wales on Sunday.

It leaves Madrid uncertain over the fitness of two key players, with the crunch La Liga game against Barca at Camp Nou fast-approaching on October 26.

Wales coach Ryan Giggs said Bale was struggling with pain in his calf towards the end of their draw with Croatia in Cardiff but suggested the problem was cramp.

Madrid confirmed on Tuesday that Modric sustained a thigh injury in the match.

Real Madrid, who sit top of La Liga, play away at Mallorca on Saturday and at Barcelona a week later, with an important Champions League group game away at Galatasaray in between.

Lucas Vazquez has also picked up a knock and is unlikely to be available this weekend.

ICPC PROBES MORE INTO NFF

The Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission have invited more officials of the Nigeria Football Federation for questioning over the ongoing corruption investigation.

The ICPC is currently investigating officials of the NFF over alleged corruption and “having more than what they could have earned.”

In the first phase of the investigation, no fewer than 15 properties belonging to NFF president, Amaju Pinnick; NFF Head Technical Committee, Ahmed Yusuf; NFF second vice president, Shehu Dikko; and General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, were seized.

Checks by The PUNCH on Tuesday revealed that apart from Head, Women’s Football Unit, NFF, Ruth David, that was earlier invited, NFF’s first vice president, Seyi Akinwunmi, was also invited.

Both David and Akinwunmi are not part of the four officials whose properties were seized by the ICPC and no case has been publicly established against them yet.

Sources in the ICPC told our correspondent that the officials were invited to answer questions relating to their involvement in the ongoing investigation of the football ruling body.

“Seizure of the properties is the first phase of the investigation. Many officials of the NFF are under investigation and this is another phase,” the source added.

When contacted, the spokesperson of the ICPC, Mrs Rasheedat Okoduwa, refused to give details of the ICPC’s officials questioning sessions with the newly invited NFF officials.

She also declined to comment on the extent of the investigation, but confirmed that Akinwunmi was invited.

“Yes, he (Akinwunmi) was invited, but he came here last week. Investigation is ongoing,” she added.

Asked when the NFF officials may be arraigned, the ICPC spokesperson responded, “Our investigation is still ongoing. These things have stages, when we get to that stage, we will act accordingly.”

Gauff grabs first title, defeats Ostapenko in Linz final

Coco Gauff in 2019, has hit another massive milestone as the American teenage sensation won her first WTA singles title at the Upper Austria Ladies Linz, outlasting former Top 5 player Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2, in the championship match on Sunday.

Gauff went from losing in the final round of qualifying to entering the main draw as a lucky loser and claiming her first-ever Top 10 win over Kiki Bertens in her maiden WTA quarterfinal.

The young American went on to reach her first tour-level semifinal and final before her 99-minute win over Ostapenko gave her the trophy. Already guaranteed to make her Top 100 debut after her first couple of wins this week, Gauff is projected to rise inside the Top 75 in the WTA rankings on Monday.

15-year-old Gauff, who started the season ranked well outside the Top 600, becomes the youngest WTA singles titlist since Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic picked up titles at Vancouver and Tashkent by the age of 15 years, 5 months in 2004.
