Haaland Fires Dortmund To Victory In Spain

Erling Braut Haaland continued his stunning scoring run in the Champions League as Borussia Dortmund put aside their domestic woes to take control of their last-16 tie with Sevilla.

They trailed early on to a Suso shot that deflected in off Mats Hummels.

Mahmoud Dahoud levelled before Haaland got his 17th goal in 13 games in the competition to put them ahead.

It was 18 soon after via a neat finish, with Luuk de Jong scoring late on to give Sevilla hope in the tie.

The substitute's side-foot finish from a free-kick was reward for a concerted push from the home side that ultimately came too late to level the score on the night.

There was a video assistant referee check for a penalty for the Spanish side in added time for a potential foul by Thomas Meunier on De Jong but the officials deemed the contact between the two legal.

The second leg in Germany is on 9 March.

Man City Beat Everton To Go 10 Points Clear

Carlo Ancelotti believes Manchester City are hurtling towards a third Premier League title in four seasons after his Everton side were beaten by the Premier League leaders.

The Everton boss said it was "almost impossible" to compete against Pep Guardiola's side, who extended their lead at the top to 10 points with 14 matches remaining.

"I think so, it is really difficult to say another name," said the Italian when asked if Everton had lost to the team that will become champions.

"It was hard, almost impossible. At the moment they are the best team, they have quality, power, belief.

"It is very difficult to compete with them."

Phil Foden fired City on their way to a 17th successive win in all competitions with a right-footed shot which hit Everton substitute Seamus Coleman on its way past Jordan Pickford.

Hard-working Everton were back on level terms five minutes later, Lucas Digne's powerful attempt coming back off the post and hitting Richarlison before flying over the line.

However, a wonderful curling finish from 18 yards by Riyad Mahrez restored City's lead before Bernardo Silva beat Pickford from a similar distance in the closing stages.

By beating Everton they also become the first team in English top-flight history to win their opening 10 matches in a calendar year.

Osaka Beats Williams To Reach Australian Open Final

Naomi Osaka claimed an impressive victory over Serena Williams to reach the Australian Open final and end the American's latest quest for a record-equaling 24th Grand Slam title.

Three-time Slam champion Osaka withstood early pressure from Williams to win 6-3 6-4.

Osaka is on a 20-match unbeaten streak and has never lost a Slam final.

The Japanese will face either America's Jennifer Brady or Czech Karolina Muchova in Saturday's final.

"I was really nervous and scared in the beginning and then I sort of eased my way into it," Osaka said.

"It's just always an honour to play her and I just didn't want to go out really dud. I just wanted to try my best."

It is the first time Williams has lost a semi-final at the Australian Open in eight appearances in the last four.

Williams will be left to rue the opportunities she let slip and once again wonder whether she will equal Margaret Court's major record.
