Troost-Ekong Gives Nigerian National Team Allowances to Children in Akwa Ibom

Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has made a generous gesture by pledging his future camp allowances and match bonuses to support aspiring footballers in Akwa Ibom. The 30-year-old center-back, who plays for PAOK Thessaloniki and hails from Akwa Ibom State, announced his donation on Monday.

With a Dutch mother and a Nigerian father, Troost-Ekong maintains strong ties to his Ibibio roots and is committed to giving back to the community that shaped his family history. Widely respected among Akwa Ibom natives, Troost-Ekong's stellar performances for the national team, including his leadership as captain during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, have earned him admiration.

Despite Nigeria's loss in the final, Troost-Ekong emerged as the tournament's top scorer with three goals and was named MVP. His achievements were recognized by the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, who honored him for his outstanding performance at the AFCON. During a reception at the Government House in Uyo, Troost-Ekong presented an Eagles jersey to the Governor as a gesture of gratitude for the state's support.

Although he was eligible to represent both the Netherlands and Nigeria internationally due to his heritage, Troost-Ekong ultimately chose to play for Nigeria. He made his senior debut for the Super Eagles in June 2015 and has since earned 71 caps, scoring seven goals.

Rafael Nadal: 12-Time Barcelona Open Winner Set for Comeback After Lengthy Injury Break

Rafael Nadal is set to make his comeback at the Barcelona Open, while Jack Draper and Emma Raducanu will compete in Munich and Stuttgart respectively. Nadal, a 12-time champion in Barcelona, has confirmed his readiness to face Flavio Cobolli in the first round today at 3 p.m BST.

Despite not playing since the Brisbane International in January due to a micro muscle tear, Nadal expressed his fitness in a press conference on Monday and intends to continue practicing on clay in preparation for the tournament. The 37-year-old, a record 14-time winner at the French Open, has had to postpone his return following the injury in Brisbane, leading to withdrawals from several tournaments.

However, he aims to regain form on his favored surface, with the French Open looming on May 20. Stefanos Tsitsipas, who recently won the Monte Carlo title, believes Nadal remains a formidable opponent on clay, predicting a potential appearance by Nadal in the Barcelona final.

Tsitsipas emphasized Nadal's competitiveness and experience, stating that Nadal's prowess on clay makes him the ultimate challenge for any opponent, regardless of his stage in his career.

Leverkusen Win First Bundesliga Title, Breaking Bayern’s 11-Year Run

Bayer Leverkusen made history on Sunday by clinching their first-ever Bundesliga title in their 120-year existence, defeating Werder Bremen 5-0 and ending Bayern Munich's 11-year reign over the German top flight.

Leverkusen, under the leadership of Xabi Alonso, displayed nerves of steel in a commanding performance that sealed their victory and extended their unbeaten streak to an impressive 43 games across all competitions. A hat-trick from Florian Wirtz, along with goals from Victor Boniface and Granit Xhaka, propelled Leverkusen to glory, finally shedding their infamous 'Neverkusen' label.

As the final whistle approached, jubilant fans couldn't contain their excitement, with some prematurely storming the pitch. However, the players managed to usher them back, and as the clock struck 90 minutes, tearful supporters flooded the field to celebrate with the team.

Leverkusen's triumph sees them sitting comfortably atop the Bundesliga table with 79 points after 29 games, a historic achievement in German league history, boasting a 16-point lead over Bayern Munich and Stuttgart.

The atmosphere was electric as Leverkusen's bus navigated through a sea of black and red-clad fans en route to the BayArena. Fans even renamed the street in honor of coach Xabi Alonso, reflecting the city's overwhelming support for the team.

Looking ahead to their Europa League clash against West Ham, Alonso made strategic changes to his lineup, including benching key players like Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Alex Grimaldo. However, the replacements proved their mettle, with Boniface scoring early on and Wirtz securing a hat-trick in style.

Meanwhile, Darmstadt suffered a 1-0 defeat to Freiburg, pushing them closer to relegation with only five games remaining, highlighting the stark contrast in fortunes between the two teams on a momentous day for Leverkusen.
