Laporta Elected Barcelona President For Second Time

Joan Laporta has been named as Barcelona president for a second time after winning the club's election.

Laporta, whose central pledge was to keep Lionel Messi at the club, won more than 54% of the vote.

The 58-year-old, who oversaw the appointment of Pep Guardiola as head coach in his previous spell at the club between 2003-2010, succeeds Josep Maria Bartomeu who resigned in October.

Victor Font was second with 30% of the vote, with Toni Freixa a distant third.

Barcelona said 55,611 of its 109,531 eligible members voted in the election, which was postponed from January because of coronavirus restrictions in Catalonia.

Richarlison Header Lifts Everton Up To Fifth

Everton moved up to fifth in the Premier League as Richarlison's 65th-minute header was enough to secure a 1-0 win over West Brom at The Hawthorns.

Mbaye Diagne was denied a dramatic late equaliser in the third minute of stoppage time when his finish was ruled out for offside.

The striker saw an early header brilliantly kept out by Jordan Pickford before Dominic Calvert-Lewin went close as Sam Johnstone kept out his shot from close range.

But Everton took control in the second period and found the breakthrough when substitute Gylfi Sigurdsson's cross was turned in by Richarlison for his fourth goal in as many games.

The visitors' third straight league win moved them temporarily into the Champions League places but Chelsea's 1-0 victory at Liverpool later on Thursday squeezed them out to fifth. West Brom remain in 19th place after 27 games, nine points adrift of safety.

An unfortunate Tosin Adarabioyo own goal saw Tottenham edge to a narrow 1-0 win at Fulham, with the hosts once again frustrated in front of goal.

Fulham had seen a plethora of chances pass them by in a goalless draw against Crystal Palace at the weekend and a lack of cutting edge up front was once again their Achilles heel on Thursday.

They were unable to keep a third successive home clean sheet when Adarabioyo (19) inadvertently turned Dele Alli's flick into his own net to ultimately hand Spurs their first league away win since January 17.

Fulham dominated the second half and thought they had deservedly equalised when Josh Maja (62) fired home, but the ball had hit Mario Lemina on the arm just before and VAR ruled out the strike.

Meanwhile, the win boosts Spurs' chance of finishing in a European spot and have won back-to-back Premier League games for the first time since November. They are four points from Everton in fifth and five off Chelsea, who went into fourth after their 1-0 win against Liverpool.

Chelsea Go Fourth As Liverpool Suffer Fifth Straight Defeat At Anfield

Chelsea boosted their top-four hopes as Mason Mount's first-half strike inflicted a fifth straight defeat at Anfield for champions Liverpool.

Thomas Tuchel's side dominated the first half and thought they had scored through Timo Werner in the 24th minute, but the goal was ruled out by VAR after an extremely tight offside call.

However, Chelsea's dominance did eventually pay off when Mount fired past Alisson to give the visitors a deserved lead.

Liverpool showed more urgency after the break, but they struggled to find their fluency in attack and failed to create many clear-cut chances as Chelsea held on for what could prove to be a crucial three points in the race for Champions League qualification.

Victory sees Chelsea, who continue their unbeaten start to life under Tuchel, move up to fourth in the Premier League table ahead of another crucial game at home to Everton on Monday (kick-off 6pm).
