EUROPA LEAGUE: EMERY REACHES BREAKING POINT AS ARSENAL LOSE AT HOME

Unai Emery’s future as Arsenal coach was plunged into further doubt on Thursday when the Gunners slumped to a 2-1 loss in the Europa League against Eintracht Frankfurt. Arsenal are now winless in seven games, the club’s worst run since 1992.

Japan midfielder Daichi Kamada’s second-half double for the Germans came after captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had opened the scoring in first half injury time for Arsenal inside a half-full Emirates Stadium. Boos from the lowest attendance at the ground since it opened in 2006 greeted Emery and his misfiring team at the final whistle while some disgruntled fans held up banners demanding ‘Emery Out’.

Aubameyang struck home just before the half-time whistle with a low effort for his ninth goal in 14 matches. Kamada’s equaliser came 10 minutes later as he curled his tidy shot past Emiliano Martinez before adding his second on 64 minutes with a drive from outside the box to inflict a first home defeat of the campaign on Emery’s men.

Tennis: Quadre tops Nigeria women’s ranking

Teenage sensation Oyinlomo Quadre has emerged as the highest ranked women tennis player in Nigeria for the first time.

In the ranking released by the Nigeria Tennis Federation on Wednesday, Quadre moved up from the third position to the first position.

She displaced former No. 1 Blessing Samuel, who is now ranked third.

She also won the CBN Open title in June and claimed the Dala Hard Court trophy in Kano, last week.

Quadre secured 500 points to stay top, ahead of Aanu Aiyegbusi, who moved up to second from fourth position with 300 points.

Samuel has 285 points, while fourth-place Christie Agugbom has 265 points. Patience Onebamhion completes the top five, with 170 points.

In the men’s ranking, there was no change in the top three positions.

Sylvester Emmanuel remained top with 495 points, while Joseph Imeh remains in second, with 20 points behind Emmanuel.

Veteran player Abdulmumin Babalola is in third place, while Uche Oparaoji, who reached the semi-finals in Kano, moved up a spot to be ranked 4th and Thomas Otu in 5th place.

NPFL: Kwara take over Delta Force slot

Kwara United have taken over the slot of Delta Force FC in the Nigeria Professional Football League.

With this, after a match in the 2019/20 Nigeria National League, Kwara will play in the topflight.

They will continue from week six, after formal registration of the club following the take-over.

Delta Force earlier acquired Kada City of Kaduna State before the start of the current NPFL season.

Kwara in a statement on Thursday said the agreement was sealed after a thorough discussion between the management of the two sides in Delta State, with the General Manager of Kwara, Bashir Badawiy, leading the North Central club’s negotiation team.

Kwara chairman, Clement Titiloye, said that the club was aware of the challenges of doing so, saying; “It’s a development that the stakeholders will also want to support.”

Titiloye commended the Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his support and encouragement.

“We are conscious of the challenges that will come with this massive decision, but we know it’s a situation that is redeemable, as the NPFL is just starting,” he said.

Delta are currently in 17th position on the NPFL log with four points after five matches, winning just a game, one drawn three lost three, with minus five goals difference.

Kwara got relegated at the end of last season, and was drawn in Group A2 of the on-going NNL alongside Niger Tornadoes, FC Taraba, Sokoto United, El-Kanemi Warriors, Gombe United, Yobe Desert Stars, Rarara FC, Mighty Jets, EFCC and Real Stars.

AMUNIKE APPLIES FOR ZAMBIA JOB

Former Nigeria winger Emmanuel Amunike wants to return to management and has confirmed his application for the vacant Zambia national team job.

Amunike, who left his position as coach of Tanzania’s Taifa Stars following a dismal showing at the 2019 AFCON, has since been out of job.

The 48-year-old said he hoped to build on the success of helping Tanzania reach the AFCON.

“I applied and did all we were asked to present and now we wait. I’m not sure if I I’m the preferred candidate for the job, but we’ll wait to see.

“In football, as a manager, you want to move and grow and I have moved on from Tanzania, where we set up a structure and hopefully, they can build on it despite losing all our games at the AFCON in Egypt.

“The Tanzania journey has come and gone and now we’re looking for bigger challenges,” the 2015 U-17 World Cup winner told Brila.
