Man. City Bounce Back From Derby Defeat To Go 14 Points Clear

Manchester City returned to form with a thrilling 5-2 win over Southampton that moves them 14 points clear at the top of the table.

Saints took the game to the Premier League leaders but two goals apiece from Riyad Mahrez and Kevin De Bruyne underlined City's superior quality in an entertaining game.

De Bruyne's early effort had been cancelled out by James Ward-Prowse's penalty but goals from Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan secured City a two-goal advantage at half-time.

There was even time for more VAR debate when Phil Foden appeared to be fouled by Alex McCarthy only to be denied a penalty - seemingly due to his own desire to stay on his feet.

But it did not cost City as further second-half goals from Mahrez and De Bruyne - either side of a Che Adams strike - ensured they shrugged off the derby defeat to Manchester United on Sunday, swiftly ending any talk of a dip in form. Southampton stay in 14th position.

PSG Hold Off Barcelona To Reach UCL Quarter Finals

Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman says Lionel Messi can have no doubts over the "great future" the club has after they bowed out of the Champions League with a spirited performance at Paris St-Germain.

Messi, 33, who has won the competition with Barcelona on four occasions, outlined his frustrations at the Nou Camp last summer and was heavily linked with a move to PSG prior to this last-16 tie.

However, while the result saw Barca fail to reach the last eight of the competition for the first time in 14 years, Koeman says the manner of their exit could help to persuade the Argentine to continue his long association with the club.

"Leo (Messi) has seen for quite some time that the team is improving thanks to all the changes we've made," said Koeman.

"Particularly, we have young players of great quality. We've got a great future ahead. Leo can't have any doubts about what the future holds for this team.

"We are departing this Champions League in a very different manner from the way we did last season. In this game, we hit our level and that's the road we have to follow."

But a day after watching his old nemesis Cristiano Ronaldo bow out of the competition with Juventus, Messi befell the same fate on what could yet prove to be his final Champions League appearance for Barcelona.

His stunning 25-yard equaliser had given the visitors hope of staging a remarkable comeback, with Kylian Mbappe earlier putting the hosts in front against the run of play with a penalty.

But some wasteful finishing, including a Messi penalty that was deflected on to the bar by PSG goalkeeper Keylor Navas on the stroke of half time, sealed their fate.

March 11, 2021 Maracana Stadium To Be Named After Brazil Legend Pele

Maracana Stadium To Be Named After Brazil Legend Pele

Brazil's iconic Maracana stadium is to be named in honour of the country's legendary footballer Pele.

The move follows a vote by the Rio de Janeiro state legislature to change the venue's name to the Edson Arantes do Nascimento - Rei Pele stadium.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento is the 80-year-old's full name, while Rei means king in Portuguese.

The Rio de Janeiro's state governor must approve the name change before it becomes official.

Pele, who won three World Cups as a player for Brazil, scored his 1,000th goal at the stadium in 1969 when playing for Santos against Vasco da Gama.

The Maracana held the 1950 and 2014 World Cup finals, as well as the opening ceremony of the 2016 Olympics.

More than 200,000 spectators are reported to have been in the stadium to watch Uruguay beat Brazil in the 1950 final, although its capacity is now 78,838.

It was named after Mario Filho, a journalist who lobbied for its construction in the 1940s, but was known as the Maracana after the area in which it is located.
