Italy Dominant In Impressive Display Over Northern Island

A commanding first-half display by Italy condemned Northern Ireland to a 2-0 defeat in their opening World Cup qualifier in Parma.

An early goal from Domenico Berardi set the tone for the slick hosts, with Bailey Peacock-Farrell then beaten by Ciro Immobile at his near post.

The four-time World Cup winners have still never lost a home World Cup qualifier, with Thursday's win adding to the 10 victories they secured in 10 Euro 2020 qualifiers.

Northern Ireland responded strongly after the break and went close through Gavin Whyte and Paddy McNair.

Ian Baraclough's men play Bulgaria at home in their next qualifier.

That is next Wednesday night at Belfast's Windsor Park, but before that at the same venue on Sunday, Baraclough must guide his squad through a friendly against USA.

Havertz And Gundogan Impress In Germany’s Win Over Iceland

Kai Havertz and Ilkay Gundogan scored as Germany got their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign off to a good start with a comfortable win over Iceland.

The home side led 2-0 after just seven minutes, with Chelsea forward Havertz firing in the second after Leon Goretzka's well-taken opener.

Gundogan continued his fine goal scoring form this season by adding a third.

The Manchester City midfielder has now netted 15 times in his past 24 appearances for club and country.

The closest Iceland came to scoring was a Runar Sigurjonsson shot that deflected just past the far post in the first half.

The home side were vastly superior, though, and should have scored more, with Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger heading a superb chance wide.

Germany had suffered a scare before kick-off when midfielder Jonas Hofmann tested positive for Covid-19, but the game was allowed to go ahead after consultation with local authorities.

Germany coach Joachim Low, who is stepping down after this year's European Championship, was pleased with his team's start.

Ollie Watkins Scores In Debut For England In Routine Victory

England's World Cup 2022 qualifying campaign started with a predictably routine stroll to victory against San Marino at Wembley.

The side at the bottom end of the FIFA world rankings at 210 failed to provide any sort of threat for England, even with captain Harry Kane starting on the bench, and so it proved in this one-sided qualifier behind closed doors.

England were encamped in San Marino territory for the entire game and the only disappointment for manager Gareth Southgate will be the fact their finishing was very poor.

A noteworthy highlight of the game was a late goal for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins on debut after he came on as a substitute.

James Ward-Prowse's first goal for England, swept in from Ben Chilwell's low cross, gave them the lead after 14 minutes before Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin doubled the advantage seven minutes later with a header from a fine Reece James delivery.

Raheem Sterling, who looked desperate to score from the start, added the third before half-time when his shot was deflected in at the near post and Calvert-Lewin scored his second with a simple finish, laid on by Jesse Lingard, eight minutes after the break.

One San Marino player to emerge with huge credit was goalkeeper Elia Benedettini, who made a string of superb saves from Chilwell, Mason Mount, Lingard and Ward-Prowse as England made the expected winning start to their World Cup qualifying campaign.

New Zealand Deputy Pm Criticises Adesanya Over Comments

UFC star Israel Adesanya has been slammed by New Zealand's deputy prime minister for making 'flippant comments' about rape after sending a grim taunt to a rival fighter.

The middleweight champion has received significant backlash for his offensive video after hitting out at Kevin Holland by saying in a now-deleted Instagram post: "Bro, I will f***ing rape you."

And the New Zealander has now been criticized by his own country's deputy prime minister Grant Robertson, who has taken a dim view on his words and appeared to call on the UFC to take action against him.

"There is never a time to make flippant comments about rape. It's just not something anybody should do."

"I'm sure Israel understands that. I believe he has deleted the tweet in question. It will be up to the UFC as to what they do.

"But I would certainly be making clear to him, and to anybody actually, that we have to take rape seriously.

Adesanya, who was born in Nigeria but has been a New Zealand citizen since he was 10, failed to respond to the comments directly but appeared undisturbed by the criticism.

He tweeted a gif alongside the words, "Incoming click bait NZ media in 3, 2, 1... This is what it's all about...CLOUT!!"
