PSG Knock-Out Title Holders On Away-Goals

Paris St-Germain, albeit beaten on the night, held on to claim an away-goals victory over holders Bayern Munich that takes them through to the last four of the Champions League.

In a fascinating second leg between the sides that contested last year's final, PSG were threatening on the break, testing visiting goalkeeper Manuel Neuer a number of times and twice hitting the woodwork through Neymar.

Current champions, Bayern broke the deadlock, giving themselves hope of a comeback win as Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting rose highest to follow-up David Alaba's saved shot with a close-range header.

Missing the injured Robert Lewandowski, the German side lacked their usual ruthlessness up front and were unable to find the second goal that would have continued their trophy defence.

Kylian Mbappe thought he had sealed the tie with just over 10 minutes to go, but after breaking clear and firing in the assistant's flag ruled his effort out.

PSG will face either Borussia Dortmund or Manchester City in the semi-finals, with the latter holding a 2-1 advantage going into Wednesday's second leg in Germany.

April 13, 2021 Tuchel Says it’s Time For Chelsea FC to Win Champions League Again

Tuchel Says it’s Time For Chelsea FC to Win Champions League Again

Thomas Tuchel has declared Chelsea’s readiness to conquer Europe – telling his players: Our time is now.

Tuchel is targeting two trophies in his first four months in charge at Stamford Bridge, with his side set to face Manchester City in the semi-final of the FA Cup on Saturday.

They can also book their place in the last four of the Champions League on Tuesday when they take a 2-0 lead into the second leg of their quarter-final with Porto.

Tuchel was parachuted in to rescue Chelsea’s season after it began to unravel under Frank Lampard in January and was told he had to deliver immediately.

The German accepted that challenge and believes his team could be on course for a glorious end to the campaign.

He said: “We are in the second leg of the quarter-final of the Champions League, you will not find any team who does not have the goal to reach the semi-final.

“We are in the semi-final of the FA Cup and have the chance to arrive in the final, if we arrive in the final then we have the chance to win.

“There is nothing to hide. This is a club that has a culture, a structure, to win titles and win games consecutively. Chelsea is the club that has the culture and the history and mentality to do so.

“I am here to win titles, I am here to win games and as a result, win titles. This is what I demand of myself so why should we now say anything different? If you want to win in five years or three years, I don’t know what that is.

“Now is the time, but, honestly, we can talk for hours and hours, but tomorrow is the game to play and there is no tougher match than the next game, there is no tougher obstacle than the one in front of you and we should not get lost in dreams, hopes and speeches or whatever.”

Chelsea are still battling on three fronts, with Tuchel also targeting a top four finish to be certain of Champions League qualification.

But the Premier League will be put to one side as they focus on Europe and the FA Cup.

“If you want to finish the season with a trophy we’d better win both matches, otherwise could be difficult,” said the German. “Because the Premier League title will not be our job to lose.

“It’s most important for me to be fully focused on what we do, and forget that we have already a result (from the first leg), and forget what we did at Crystal Palace because it’s the past.

“There’s nothing less interesting in football than the past. Everything that counts in football is the next match, the next competition. We play in three competitions and hopefully we’ll still be in three competitions.

“Tomorrow there’s no trophy to win, on Saturday there’s no trophy to win, but of course these are matches where we can take decisive steps, we are well aware.

“Everybody can wreck their heads about it, but we are there to play football, and this is the target, and this is the challenge actually – to keep focus.”

Former Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman Retires

The New England Patriots' Julian Edelman has announced his retirement, saying "the wheels have finally come off" after a number of injuries.

He won the Super Bowl three times with the Patriots and was named the Super Bowl's Most Valuable Player in 2019.

The wide receiver spent 11 years with the side but missed much of the 2020 season after a knee operation.

"I'm honored and so proud to be retiring as a Patriot," the 34-year-old said in a video on Twitter.

Edelman is one of only seven wide receivers to win the Super Bowl MVP.

He scored the decisive touchdown against the Seattle Seahawks in the 2015 Super Bowl and took the catch that sparked the Patriots' comeback win over the Falcons in 2017.

West Brom Thump Southampton To Boost Survival Hopes

Sam Allardyce said West Brom are "pricking up people's ears" after they made it back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time this season with victory over Southampton.

Two goals in three first-half minutes through Matheus Pereira and Matt Phillips put Allardyce's men in control at the Hawthorns before Callum Robinson's fine finish completed the Baggies' biggest home win in the Premier League since November 2016.

"It is one of many top quality performances over the past eight or 10 games but we haven't received the credit because we didn't win," Allardyce said. "We have missed out on many points due to our poor finishing.

"We have had two very important wins but unfortunately we have to rely on other people losing.

"But we are still fighting."

The victory was made more admirable by the fact West Brom needed to rally after having what would have been an opening goal for Mbaye Diagne controversially ruled out for offside after video assistant referee Kevin Friend decided there was insufficient evidence to overturn the on-pitch decision, even though TV replays suggested otherwise.

Sam Johnstone completed an excellent evening for West Brom when he turned away James Ward-Prowse's injury-time penalty.

West Brom are still in deep trouble, eight points adrift of fourth-bottom Newcastle with seven games remaining.
