Rodger Federer To Play At French Open

Roger Federer has confirmed he will play in this year's French Open as he continues his return from injury.

Federer, 39, is making his comeback after two knee operations and has not played a Grand Slam since January 2020.

The 20-time Grand Slam winner made his return after 14 moths out at last month's Qatar Open but has not played since.

On Sunday, he said will play the clay-court Geneva Open in May followed by Roland Garros, which begins on 30 May.

Federer, who won his only French Open title in 2009, overcame Britain's Dan Evans in his comeback match in Doha last month but was then beaten by Nikoloz Basilashvili in the next round.

After losing to Novak Djokovic in the 2020 Australian Open, he had an operation on his right knee and after a further setback was ruled out of the entire coronavirus-hit season.

He had hoped to return at this year's Australian Open in January but "ran out f time" to regain fitness.

Federer sat out three consecutive French Opens from 2016 because of injury and a wish to manage his workload but returned in 2019, reaching the semi-finals.

Rafael Nadal won last year's men's singles title at Roland Garros to equal Federer's haul of 20 Grand Slams.

Iheanacho Fires Leicester City Into FA Cup Final

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers says his side have "the chance to create history" after reaching their first FA Cup final since 1969 at the expense of Southampton at Wembley.

Kelechi Iheanacho's second-half goal proved decisive for the Foxes, whose last major final of any description came in 2000, when they lifted the League Cup.

"That is what this game is about, creating a memory," said Rodgers, who is yet to win major silverware in English football, but won seven trophies in less than three years as manager of Celtic.

"I have been made aware since I've been at Leicester how important this cup is for the supporters.

"We have the chance to create history. When we arrived here, that was the ambition. From a football perspective we wanted to be able to compete and we have been able to do that. Now we have a trophy to genuinely go for."

Iheanacho, who benefited from Jamie Vardy's fine work to score at the second attempt 10 minutes after the interval, added: "It is a dream come true. I watched the FA Cup when I was little and now I get the chance to play in the final.

"I think the FA Cup loves me and I love the FA Cup."

Rodgers' side will now face Chelsea in the final on 15 May, their first appearance in the showpiece since they lost 1-0 against Manchester City 52 years ago.

Courtois’ Heroics Help Madrid Earn Draw At Getafe

Thibaut Courtois made a number of important saves as a depleted Real Madrid held off a spirited Getafe to earn a point that keeps them in touch with La Liga leaders Atletico.

Zinedine Zidane was without several players through injury, suspension or in isolation because of Covid-19.

Courtois' first big save came early on when he kept out Mathias Olivera's effort from close range.

The Belgian also tipped over Nemanja Maksimovic's deflected effort late on.

Vinicius Junior brought a save out of David Soria just before half-time but Real rarely looked like snatching victory.

The draw means Real, who beat Barcelona last weekend and knocked Liverpool out of the Champions League in midweek, are three points behind leaders Atletico and two ahead of Barcelona, who have a game in hand.

April 16, 2021 Nigeria Risks Missing WA Relays Due To Internal Crises In AFN

Nigeria Risks Missing WA Relays Due To Internal Crises In AFN

Nigeria may miss out of the World Athletics Relays due to the crisis rocking the Athletics Federation of Nigeria.

Nigeria was meant to send in representatives in the 4x100m and 4x400m men and women's competitions but reports indicate that none have been sent thus far.

The Ibrahim Gusau-led AFN had fixed March 29 and 30 for the national trials at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt which was to serve as qualifiers for the WA Relays.

It was also qualifiers for the World Athletics U-20 Championships (Nairobi), 22nd CAA African Senior Athletics Championships (Algiers) and CAA Region II Championships, Kaduna.

The trials were however postponed over allegations of "interference" from the sports ministry, made by AFN.

The AFN and the supervisory sports ministry had been at loggerheads after a faction led by Olamide George, the federation's vice president, suspended Gusau, who then declared autonomy from the sports ministry in December 2019.

The WA Relays is slated to hold in Silesia, Poland between May 1 and 2, but Nigerian athletes may not be able to compete as the country is yet to send in its representatives for the event.
