Pepe’s Away Goal Gives Arsenal Hope In Europa League Semi

Nicolas Pepe's second-half penalty gave Arsenal renewed hope of reaching the Europa League final despite a semi-final first-leg loss at Villarreal as both sides finished with 10 men.

With the Gunners trailing 2-0 and a man down following Dani Ceballos' sending off, Pepe stepped up and fired home a precious away goal from the spot after Bukayo Saka had been tripped in the box.

It means Mikel Arteta's side go into next Thursday's second leg with genuine hope of reaching a second Europa League final in three seasons and with the potential of qualifying for next season's Champions League.

They appeared to be sinking without trace when Manu Trigueros fired in an early low, angled drive for the home side before Raul Albiol slammed home at the back post following Gerard Moreno's flick-on from a corner.

Ceballos' red card with 30 minutes left, courtesy of a second booking for standing on the boot of Daniel Parejo, looked to have sealed their fate.

But Bernd Leno produced two good saves to keep the home side at bay before Pepe - playing as a false nine - had his say.

Villarreal may still have fancied their chances of scoring again, but this was hampered when they too were reduced to 10 men, as Etienne Capoue shown a second yellow for a late tackle on Saka.

The 'Yellow Submarine', managed by ex-Gunners Unai Emery, will go into the second leg on top, but facing the prospect that just one unanswered concession will send them out.

Novak Djokovic To Miss Madrid Open

World number one Novak Djokovic will not defend his Madrid Open title after pulling out of next month's event.

The Serb, 33, said he was sorry he would not be able to travel to Madrid for the Masters 1000 event which starts on Sunday, four weeks before the French Open

"It's been two years already, quite a long time," he added. "Hope to see you all next year."

Last year's Madrid event was cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Djokovic was stunned last weekend by Russian world number 28 Aslan Karatsev in the semi-finals of the Serbia Open and earlier this month lost to Britain's Dan Evans in Monte Carlo.

The Serb won his 18th Grand Slam title in February with victory at the Australian Open.

He is expected to play in Rome and Belgrade next month as part of his preparations for the French Open, which starts on 30 May.

Turkish Grand Prix To Replace Canadian Grand Prix In 2021 F1 Calender

The Canadian Grand Prix has been cancelled and will be replaced on its 11-13 June date by a race at Turkey's Istanbul Park track.

It is the second successive year the Montreal event has been cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Travel restrictions made it impossible to enter Canada without a mandatory 14-day quarantine, said an F1 statement.

Meanwhile the contract for a race on Montreal's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has been extended by two years to 2031.

Canada is experiencing a rise in cases, with Ontario - neighboring province to Quebec - particularly badly affected.

Turkey returns for a second successive year as a stand-in race because of disruption caused by the pandemic.

Last year, it returned to the calendar for the first time since 2011, and was the event at which Lewis Hamilton clinched his record-equaling seventh world drivers' title.
