Kvitova Saves Match Point To Reach Second Round At Roland Garros

Petra Kvitova saved a match point to reach the French Open second round but Angelique Kerber became the first women's seed to exit the tournament.

Three-time Grand Slam champion Kerber, seeded 26th, was beaten 6-2 6-4 by Ukrainian qualifier Anhelina Kalinina.

Czech Kvitova was in danger of going the same way but recovered to beat Belgium's Greet Minnen 6-7 (7-3) 7-6 (7-5) 6-1.

Meanwhile, Naomi Osaka also advanced but was warned about media boycott.

The Japanese second seed beat Romania's Patricia Maria Tig 6-4 7-6 (7-4) before Grand Slam organizers issued a statement telling her she risked expulsion from the event if she continued to refuse to attend news conferences.

Nike Says It Split With Neymar Over Sexual Assault Investigation

US sportswear giant Nike says it stopped working with Brazilian footballer Neymar because he "refused to co-operate in a good faith investigation" into an allegation of sexual assault against an employee.

The alleged incident happened in 2016 and was reported to Nike in 2018.

Nike said its investigation was inconclusive.

A spokeswoman for Neymar said he denied the sexual assault and split with Nike last year for commercial reasons.

"Neymar Jr will vigorously defend himself against these baseless attacks in case any claim is presented, which did not happen so far," she told the wall street Journal (WSJ) newspaper, which first reported the news.

Nike parted ways with Neymar in August 2020, ending one of its most high-profile sponsorship deals. The company gave no reason for the split at the time.

Zidane Steps Down As Real Madrid Manager For Second Time

Manager Zinedine Zidane has resigned from Real Madrid for the second time in his coaching career.

Real failed to win a trophy this season and were pipped to the La Liga title by city rivals Atletico Madrid on a dramatic final day on Saturday.

Real said in a statement that they "must now respect" Zidane's decision.

They thanked Zidane, 48, for his "professionalism, dedication and passion over the years and what he means to Real Madrid".

Former France midfielder Zidane, who played for Real from 2001 to 2006, won three consecutive Champions League titles and a La Liga title in his first period as manager between 2016 and 2018.

He left in May 2018, but returned 10 months later and secured a second La Liga title last season.

"Zidane is one of Real Madrid's great icons and his legacy extends beyond what he has achieved as a coach and player at our club," Real said.

"He is aware that he has a place in the hearts of the Real Madrid fans and that he will always have a home at Real Madrid."

Real finished two points behind Atletico in La Liga as they failed to win a trophy for the first time since 2009-10.

They suffered an early exit from the Copa del Rey at the hands of third division side Alcoyano and lost to Chelsea in the Champions League semi-finals.

La Lakers Take 2-1 Series Lead Against Phoenix Suns

The Los Angeles Lakers won their first play-off game at home in eight seasons to take a 2-1 series lead with a 109-95 victory over the Phoenix Suns.

Anthony Davis again led the way for the Lakers with 34 points and 11 rebounds in the first round of the best-of-seven Western Conference play-offs.

LeBron James scored 21 points as nearly 7,500 fans watched the first play-off game at the Staples Centre since 2013.

The Lakers won last year's NBA title in a bio-secure bubble on neutral ground.

Davies became the first Lakers player since four-time NBA champion Shaquille O'Neal to score more than 30 points and come up with more than 10 rebounds in successive play-off games.

Lakers legends Elgin Baylor, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Kobe Bryant are the only other players to also manage the feat for the club.
