Brazil To Host Copa America After Argentina Removed

The 2021 Copa America will be hosted by Brazil, after Argentina was stripped of the tournament just two weeks before it starts.

The South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) said Argentina was removed as host because of the "present circumstances".

The country is currently experiencing a surge in Covid-19 cases.

Later on Monday, Conmebol confirmed Brazil would host the showpiece event, which starts on 13 June.

"Conmebol thanks the president @jairbolsonaro and his team, as well as the Brazilian Football Confederation for opening the doors of that country to what is today the safest sporting event in the world. South America will shine in Brazil with all its stars!" Conmebol said on Twitter.

But Mr Bolsonaro's chief of staff warned that there is "no done deal yet" and tough conditions would have to be met.

"We are in the middle of the process (of negotiations). But, we will not shy away from a demand that, if it's possible to be done, it could be done," Luiz Ramos said.

It is not known which stadiums would host the tournament if it goes ahead.

Argentina was originally set to co-host with Colombia, who were removed on 20 May with wide-spread protests sweeping the country.

Naomi Osaka Withdraws From French Open

World number two Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the French Open after the controversy over her refusal to speak to the media at the tournament.

In a tweet announcing the move, Japan's Osaka also said she had "suffered long bouts of depression" since winning her first Grand Slam title in 2018.

The 23-year-old said last week she would not do news conferences at Roland Garros to protect her mental health.

"I never wanted to be a distraction," the four-time major winner said.

On Sunday, Osaka won her opening match against Romania's Patricia Maria Tig in straight sets and was fined $15,000 (£10,570) for not doing post-match media.

Later that day, a joint statement from Grand Slam organizers said Osaka could face expulsion from the tournament if she continued to avoid them.

That led to the player announcing her withdrawal on Monday, saying she was going to "take some time away from the court now".

Argentina Stripped Of Copa America Hosting Rights

The 2021 Copa America has been left without a host less than two weeks before it starts after Argentina was stripped of the tournament.

Argentina was originally set to co-host with Colombia, who were removed on 20 May after protests in the country.

The South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) said Argentina has been removed because of the "present circumstances".

The country is currently experiencing a surge in Covid-19 cases.

Opposition to the tournament had grown both inside and outside Argentina's government, while Uruguay striker Luis Suarez told reporters on Friday that priority had to be given "to the health of human beings".

Conmebol said it was currently "analysing the offer of other countries" that showed interest in hosting the 10-team Copa America, which is scheduled to run from 13 June to 10 July.

The confederation will meet on Monday to decide on the next steps for the tournament, which did not take place in 2020 because of the pandemic.

Brazil are defending champions, having won the tournament in 2019.

Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne suffered a fractured nose and eye socket in the Champions League final defeat against Chelsea.

The 29-year-old was replaced in the 60th minute by Gabriel Jesus after a collision with Antonio Rudiger.

"I feel OK now. Still disappointed about yesterday obviously but we will be back," he tweeted.

De Bruyne was named in the Belgium squad for Euro 2020, with his country's first game on June 12 against Russia.

There are no indications yet whether the midfielder will be fit for the match in St Petersburg or if his injuries threaten his participation in the rest of the tournament.

City lost the final in Porto against Chelsea thanks to Kai Havertz's 42nd-minute goal.
