Nadal & Djokovic Win Opening Matches At French Open

Third seed Rafael Nadal began his bid for a 21st Grand Slam men's singles title with a straight-set win against Australia's Alexei Popyrin.

The 34-year-old Spaniard, going for a record-extending 14th triumph at Roland Garros, won in straight sets 6-3 6-2 7-6 (7-3).

Serbian top seed Novak Djokovic also eased through to round two, beating American Tennys Sandgren 6-2 6-4 6-2.

Russian seventh seed Andrey Rublev is out after losing in five sets to German world number 42 Jan-Lennard Struff.

Rublev's defeat means there is one less obstacle for Nadal as the Spaniard seeks to set an outright record for major men's singles titles - a milestone he presently shares with Roger Federer.

With the seedings based on the world rankings, Nadal is third behind Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev this year and has been landed with a potentially tricky draw.

Kevin De Bruyne To Know Euro 2020 Chances By End Of Week

The chances of Kevin de Bruyne playing in Euro 2020 will become clearer in "the next four or five days", says Belgium coach Roberto Martinez.

Manchester City's De Bruyne fractured his nose and left eye socket in a clash with Chelsea's Antonio Rudiger during Saturday's Champions League final.

Belgium's first game is against Russia on 12 June, before they face Denmark (17 June) and Finland (21 June).

"I've spoken to Kevin and he was quite positive," said Martinez.

"We've got to be very cautious, but we will get more clarity in the next days.

"We don't know if we can use him in the first game. I cannot give an answer because I don't have any medical facts right now, we are still assessing the injury and over the next four to five days we expect clarity.

"We are very fortunate that even though he has a double fracture, he doesn't need surgery. An operation would have made it impossible for him to play in the European Championship."

The 29-year-old Manchester City midfielder tweeted he "felt OK now" on Sunday, with Martinez saying he had undergone a number of hospital tests and had returned to Manchester, and would join up with the squad next week as planned.

Roger Federer Impresses On French Open Return

Roger Federer eased through his French Open return with a straight-set win over Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion had not played at Roland Garros since 2019 and was playing his first match at a major in 16 months after a knee injury.

The 39-year-old Swiss played smoothly and confidently as he won 6-2 6-4 6-3.

Meanwhile, Russian second seed Daniil Medvedev ended his misery at Roland Garros as he beat Alexander Bublik for his first win on the Paris clay.

Medvedev, 25, won 6-3 6-3 7-5 against Kazakhstan's Bublik, ending a run of four successive defeats in round one.

Elsewhere in the men's singles draw on Monday, Croatia's Marin Cilic set up a second-round meeting with Federer following a 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 6-2 win against Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech.

Belgian 13th seed David Goffin was beaten in straight sets by Italian 19-year-old Lorenzo Musetti, the Lyon Open semi-finalist winning 6-0 7-5 7-6 (7-3) to claim his first victory at a Grand Slam.

Norwegian 15th seed Casper Ruud, 22, overcame Benoit Paire 5-7 6-2 6-1 7-6 (7-4), while John Isner won an all-American match against Sam Querrey 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 6-4.

Sergio Aguero Agrees Two-Year Deal With Barcelona

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero will join Barcelona on a two-year contract when his contract expires at the end of June.
