Spain Captain Sergio Busquets Tests Positive For Covid-19

Spain captain Sergio Busquets has tested positive for Covid-19, eight days before their Euro 2020 opener.

As a result of the Barcelona midfielder's test, Spain have had to pull out of their final warm-up game against Lithuania on Tuesday.

The rest of the squad tested negative but Busquets, 32, and his contacts will remain isolated.

The friendly with Lithuania will now be played by Spain's Under-21 squad, said the Spanish football federation (RFEF).

The RFEF is offering ticket refunds and discounted tickets to those who still wish to attend.

Spain begin their Group E campaign against Sweden in Seville on 14 June, before playing Poland (19 June) and Slovakia (23 June).

NYSC DG Says Corps Members Can Be Mobilised For War

NYSC DG says corps members are part of the national defence policy.

The NYSC DG said this on Channels Television’s ‘Sunrise Daily’ programme on Wednesday, June 3, 2021, while reacting to moves to scrapnthe NYSC scheme.

Ibrahim said, “Corps members are on reserve. They are part of the national defence policy of this country. So, where there is serious war, our corps members are educated, they are knowledgeable and they can be trained. You see the drill and so on.

“You can imagine within the short three weeks in the orientation camps, the corps members are moulded. They are like soldiers. You see female corps members blowing the army horn, playing with the military band.

“So, if not for the knowledge, where are you going to mobilise such young Nigerians to train them quickly to put in their best for the country? So, corps members are on reserve. They are also part of the national defence policy.”

The NYSC boss also said that the scheme had become more important than ever in the face of the rising calls for secession in Nigeria.

He further explained that that insecurity in the country was not enough reason to scrap the scheme, saying corps members play a huge role in educating children in Internally Displaced Persons’ camps.

Ibrahim maintained that the scheme had been able to foster national unity and cohesion, adding that many corps members had found love in the various orientation camps and married.

Goalkeeper Alisson Becker Set For Contract Talks With Livepool

Liverpool intend to open contract talks with goalkeeper Alisson Becker when he returns to the club after the summer.

The Brazil international is currently away preparing for the Copa America and is one of several players the club want to start negotiations with.

Alisson, 28, joined the Reds from Roma on a six-year-deal in 2018 for £66.8m.

That made him the world's most expensive keeper at the time, and he has gone on to win the Champions League and Premier League.

Alisson scored a crucial late winner against West Brom in May and won the club's goal of the season award, becoming the sixth keeper to score a Premier League goal - and the first to do so with a header.

Liverpool had a difficult season after they were unable to retain their Premier League title but secured qualification for the Champions League with a 2-0 over Crystal Palace on the final day of the campaign.
