Defending Champion Swiatek Knocked Out In French Open Quarters

Greece's Maria Sakkari beat defending champion Iga Swiatek to reach her maiden Grand Slam semi-final at the French Open at Roland Garros.

She will face Czech Barbora Krejcikova, who won a nervy encounter with American teenager Coco Gauff 7-6 (8-6) 6-3.

Sakkari, the 17th seed, is now the highest-ranked woman in the draw after seeing off Swiatek 6-4 6-4.

Krejcikova, meanwhile, saved five set points from 17-year-old Gauff in the opener before the world number 33 went on to seal victory on her sixth match point.

It means all four semi-finalists in Paris are into the last four at a Grand Slam for the first time.

Tottenham In Talks With Ex-Roma Boss Fonseca

Tottenham have opened talks with former Roma boss Paulo Fonseca about becoming their new manager.

The Premier League club are seeking a successor to Jose Mourinho, who was sacked in April and has since replaced his fellow Portuguese at Roma.

Spurs are yet to agree a deal with Fonseca, and having reached advanced talks with Antonio Conte only for the deal to collapse, there is wariness.

Fonseca impressed at Roma but lost his job after a seventh-placed finish.

They were beaten in the Europa League semi-finals by Manchester United.

Fonseca replaced Claudio Ranieri at Roma after three years with Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine. The Portuguese also coached Porto and Braga in his homeland.

He won three successive doubles in charge of Shakhtar between 2016 and 2019, as well as a Portuguese Cup with Braga in 2016 and a Portuguese Super Cup with Porto in 2013.

His potential move to Tottenham bears the hallmarks of significant involvement from the club's new sporting director Fabio Paratici,  who has joined after 11 years at Juventus.

Nikola Jokic Named NBA MVP

The Denver Nuggets' Nikola Jokic became the lowest-drafted MVP in NBA history and the first player in franchise history to win the award.

The Serbian centre started all 72 games for the Nuggets and averaged 26.4 points, 10.8 rebounds and 8.3 assists per contest - all setting or matching career highs.

The 26-year-old was drafted 41st overall in 2014 and is only the second second-round draft pick to become an MVP after Willis Reed (1970), who was the eighth pick in 1964 when there were just nine teams in the league.

An All-Star for the third straight year, Jokic is the third European to be named the NBA's MVP after Dirk Nowitzki and Giannis Antetokounmpo, who won the award the last two seasons.

Jokic earned 91 of 101 first-place votes for a total of 971 points, with Embiid second with 586 points and Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry third with 453.
