Eguavoen Responds to Reports of Resignation as Super Eagles Coach

Super Eagles interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has dismissed rumors suggesting that he resigned following the team's 0-0 draw against the Amavubi of Rwanda in Kigali.

The speculation began after Eguavoen's post-match comments following the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at the Amahoro Stadium. However, speaking to journalists upon the team’s arrival in Abuja, Eguavoen clarified that the reports were false and misinterpreted.

He emphasized that he remains in charge of the Super Eagles and plans to meet with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to evaluate the team's performance after the two recent matches.

“It’s unfortunate that such inaccurate stories are being spread, especially given our current situation where we don’t need negativity. I merely mentioned that we would sit down with the federation after these games to assess the way forward,” Eguavoen explained.

He expressed concern over the misleading reports, affirming, "I am still very much in charge. As the Technical Director of the NFF, I am responsible for leading the Super Eagles at this time, and that hasn’t changed."

The Super Eagles’ next match is against the Mediterranean Knights of Libya, scheduled for mid-October at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

AFCONQ 2025: “He Was Tormenting Them” – Eguavoen on Substituting Chukwueze Against Rwanda

Interim Super Eagles coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has explained why he substituted Samuel Chukwueze during the second half of Nigeria’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against Rwanda on Tuesday. Chukwueze, who was performing well, was replaced by Moses Simon at halftime.

In his post-match interview, Eguavoen revealed that the decision to take off the AC Milan winger was due to his yellow card and the threat he posed to the hosts.

“Chukwueze is a very good player, one of our best. Today, we had a strategy in place, and he was tormenting Rwanda,” Eguavoen said. “However, he got a yellow card, and we had three players on yellow cards, which is always a risk. We had to make substitutions, and we have other players who can push forward as well."

Eguavoen added, “We thought it was best to rest Chukwueze, not because he wasn’t playing well, but to avoid the risk of him getting a second yellow card.”

Finidi: Osimhen Hasn’t Apologized for Social Media Controversy Yet

Former Super Eagles head coach Finidi George has revealed that Victor Osimhen has yet to apologize for his social media outburst that disrespected him. The incident occurred after Osimhen publicly criticized Finidi on social media, following reports that the coach had accused him of withdrawing from national team games.

Finidi shared that, despite reaching out to Osimhen, the forward has not apologized. “I sent him a message, telling him it wasn’t the right way to react. Just because someone told you that the coach said something, doesn’t mean you should address me as if I made those comments in an interview,” Finidi explained.

When asked about the possibility of Osimhen being banned from the Super Eagles as punishment, Finidi declined to comment, stating, “I don’t know. He’s already part of the team, so let him be. We cannot crucify him. He made a mistake, we’ve moved on, and life goes on.”
