Craig Bellamy Appointed As The New Wales Manager

Craig Bellamy has been appointed as the coach of the Wales men's national team, with a contract extending until 2028, the Football Association of Wales (FAW) announced on Tuesday. Bellamy, who spent the past two seasons as an assistant to Vincent Kompany at Burnley, takes over following Kompany's surprise move to Bayern Munich in May.

Expressing his excitement about the new role, Bellamy said, "It's an incredible honor for me to be allowed to lead my country, and it's the proudest moment of my career. Becoming the Cymru head coach was always my ultimate dream, and I am ready for the challenge. I will give my full commitment to developing this team and am passionate about bringing continued success to Welsh football. I can't wait to get started with our Nations League games in September."

Bellamy's first official match in charge will be against Turkey in the UEFA Nations League in Cardiff on September 6.

Dr. David Adams, FAW's chief football officer, expressed his enthusiasm for Bellamy's appointment: "I am delighted to announce Craig as our new head coach. We conducted a thorough recruitment process for the new men's national team head coach, and Craig was identified as the standout candidate. We are all looking forward to the Nations League games and working with Craig to deliver success for Welsh Football."

During his playing career, Bellamy earned 78 caps for Wales, scoring 19 goals between 1998 and 2014. He also had notable spells at Newcastle United, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Blackburn Rovers at the club level.

Manchester United Close to Finalizing Zirkzee Transfer Deal

Manchester United is in the final stages of securing the signing of Bologna forward Joshua Zirkzee, as reported by The Athletic.

The club has reached agreements on personal terms and agent commissions, which are considered reasonable within the context of the overall package. Zirkzee’s contract includes a €40 million (£34 million) release clause, and discussions about the fee are ongoing. United is exploring whether to pay the clause in full or negotiate a separate price due to potential cash flow issues.

Zirkzee is the striker that United has chosen to pursue, and a deal for the Netherlands international is nearing completion. The 23-year-old forward has attracted attention after an impressive season in Italy, scoring 11 league goals and providing five assists for Thiago Motta’s Bologna, helping them qualify for the next season’s Champions League.

The Athletic previously reported that United was considering a move for Zirkzee to bolster their forward options, providing support for last summer’s £64 million signing Rasmus Hojlund and replacing the departed Anthony Martial. United sees Zirkzee as having a complementary skill set to Hojlund, capable of enhancing their attacking options.

Currently, Zirkzee is with the Netherlands at the ongoing European Championship in Germany. He came on as a substitute in the second half during the Netherlands' 2-1 comeback victory over Turkey. Ronaldo Koeman’s squad is set to face England in the semi-finals on Wednesday.

Finidi George Appointed Technical Manager at Rivers United

Barely a month after his resignation as the coach of the Super Eagles, Finidi George has taken up the role of technical manager for NPFL side Rivers United.

During his brief and eventful tenure as the head of the Eagles, George’s 1-1 draw against South Africa in Uyo and a 2-1 loss to the Benin Republic in Abidjan put Nigeria’s qualification for the World Cup in serious doubt, leading to several calls from fans for his dismissal.

Despite what seemed like a challenging period for the 53-year-old, the 2021-22 champions expressed optimism about having the former Eagles international manage their side. In a statement on their X handle on Wednesday, the club said:

"Finidi brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our team, having had a distinguished playing career spanning over fifteen years. His impressive credentials include winning the Africa Cup of Nations with the Super Eagles in 1994, the UEFA Champions League with Ajax in 1995, and the Nigeria Premier Football League with Enyimba International FC in 2023."

General Manager of Rivers United FC, Dr. Okey Kpalukwu, welcomed George, stating: “We are delighted to have Finidi George join our team. His appointment marks a new chapter in our club’s history, and we are committed to working together to achieve success.”

An elated George expressed his gratitude to the club, saying: “I am honoured to have this opportunity, and I thank the Sports Commissioner, the General Manager, and the supporters for their confidence in me. I am committed to working hard and making the team win.”

The official unveiling of Coach Finidi George will be held on Thursday, July 4, 2024, at Sharks Stadium. The event is scheduled to begin at 2 PM.

Paris Olympics: Waldrum Selects Ajibade, Nnadozie, Oshoala, and 15 Others

Coach Randy Waldrum of the Super Falcons has selected captain Rasheedat Ajibade, goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, defender Osinachi Ohale, forward Asisat Oshoala, and 14 other players for Nigeria’s squad in this year’s Women’s Olympic Football Tournament in France.

Also included are defenders Oluwatosin Demehin and Michelle Alozie; midfielders Deborah Abiodun, Halimatu Ayinde, Christy Ucheibe, and Toni Payne; and forwards Esther Okoronkwo, Chinwendu Ihezuo, and Uchenna Kanu.

Players currently on holiday in Nigeria will join home-based players and team officials on an Air France flight from Abuja to Sevilla, Spain, on Thursday night. The remaining squad members and technical team will arrive in Sevilla on Friday for a two-week training camp. The team is set to depart for France on Thursday, July 18.

Nine-time African champions Nigeria are making their first appearance at the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament since 2008 in China. They will face Brazil, Spain, and Japan in this year’s competition. The Falcons qualified by edging South Africa’s Banyana Banyana 1-0, thanks to a penalty by Ajibade in Abuja.

Their first game is against Brazil at the Stade Bordeaux on July 25, followed by matches against Spain on July 28 and Japan on July 31. The latter two matches will be held at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes, the venue where the Super Eagles famously defeated Spain 3-2 in the 1998 FIFA World Cup finals.
