Everton Takeover Talks Called Off

Everton's potential sale to the Friedkin Group has fallen through after the Premier League club failed to reach an agreement with the American investors. Led by US billionaire Dan Friedkin, the group entered a period of exclusivity on June 21 to negotiate a possible purchase. However, on Friday, Everton announced that no deal had been struck between Friedkin and the club’s majority owner, Farhad Moshiri.

This marks the second failed sale attempt for Everton this year, following a previous breakdown in negotiations with Miami-based firm 777 Partners.

"Discussions between Blue Heaven Holdings and the Friedkin Group over a potential sale of a majority stake in Everton have ended, and the Friedkin Group will not be progressing with a purchase of the club," read a statement from the Merseyside club. "Blue Heaven Holdings and The Friedkin Group entered discussions in good faith to explore whether a sale could be agreed upon. Those discussions have concluded. The parties agree it is in both their interests for Everton to explore alternative options."

Everton also noted that the Friedkin Group would remain a lender to the club, which faced point deductions last season over breaches of Premier League financial rules. The Friedkin Group holds a controlling stake in Italian club Roma.

Farhad Moshiri, who bought a 49.9 percent share in Everton in 2016, is the Toffees’ majority owner with a 94 percent stake.

"Blue Heaven Holdings maintains a positive relationship with The Friedkin Group and would like to thank them for the time and effort they have put into this process," the statement added.

Manchester United Confirms Leny Yoro Transfer, Beat Madrid To Signing

Manchester United have completed the signing of 18-year-old defender Leny Yoro from French Ligue 1 side Lille, the clubs confirmed Thursday. United agreed on a fee of €62 million ($67.6 million), with a potential €8 million ($8.7 million) in add-ons, for the France under-21 international, sources told ESPN.

Yoro chose to join United despite interest from Real Madrid after sources revealed that the Spanish club opted against a bidding war with the Premier League side for the center-half. Sources added that Yoro informed Madrid of his decision to sign for United on Tuesday night after they failed to make a move for him.

"Signing for a club with the stature and ambition of Manchester United so early in my career is an incredible honor," Yoro said in the announcement. "Since my first conversations with the club, they set out a clear plan for how I can develop in Manchester as part of this exciting project and showed a lot of care for me and my family. I know about the history of young players at Manchester United and feel it can be the perfect place to reach my potential and achieve my ambitions, together with my new teammates. I cannot wait to get started."

Yoro will join Joshua Zirkzee, who signed from Bologna on Sunday, at Old Trafford. Both signings were facilitated by the club's new football leadership, established following Sir Jim Ratcliffe's arrival as a minority owner, along with club scouts and manager Erik ten Hag, sources said.

"Leny is one of the most exciting young defenders in world football; he possesses every attribute needed to develop into a top-class center-back," Man United's new sporting director Dan Ashworth said in a club statement. "Having had such an excellent start to his career, we are excited to support him in reaching his immense potential here at Manchester United. This club has a fantastic record of developing young players, whether homegrown or brought in from elsewhere, and giving them the required guidance, time, and patience to grow and flourish. Under Erik ten Hag and our excellent staff, we will ensure that Leny has the perfect platform to achieve the success that everyone across the club is aiming for."

Zirkzee and Yoro effectively replace forward Anthony Martial and defender Raphaël Varane, who departed the club earlier this summer. The club has not ruled out further defensive signings, sources told ESPN, with continued interest in Bayern Munich's Matthijs de Ligt and Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite. However, transfer fees remain a potential stumbling block, with ESPN reporting that United had a £50 million ($64 million) bid rejected for Branthwaite.

Yoro is regarded as one of the brightest young defensive talents in Europe, having become a first-team regular at Lille. He made his senior debut as a 16-year-old at the end of the 2021-22 season.

Why NLC Accepted the N70,000 Minimum Wage

On Thursday, Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), explained why the organized labour accepted President Bola Tinubu's proposal for a new minimum wage of N70,000. Speaking to reporters at the State House after meeting with the President, Ajaero stated that the unions agreed to the offer due to the additional incentives attached and the President's promise to review the minimum wage every three years, a significant improvement over the previous arrangement.

President Tinubu approved the N70,000 minimum wage on Thursday, as confirmed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. The announcement was made during a meeting with organized labour leaders in Abuja. This meeting followed an initial discussion between the President and labour leaders the previous week.

Once approved by the National Assembly, the new minimum wage will replace the previous N30,000 minimum wage, which expired on April 18, 2024.

Onanuga shared the news on his official X handle, @aonanuga, at 03:31 pm, stating, “Breaking: President Bola Tinubu has approved N70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers with a promise to review the national minimum wage law every three years. President Tinubu also promised to find ways to assist the private sector and the sub-nationals in paying the minimum wage.”

The labour leaders expressed their gratitude to President Tinubu for his gesture, and the President also committed to addressing the demands of university unions regarding unpaid salaries for four months.
