Ex-Red Devils Manager: “My Time at Man United Was a Failure”

David Moyes has labeled his tenure at Manchester United as the greatest regret and failure of his managerial career.

Moyes took over from Sir Alex Ferguson in July 2013, following Ferguson’s retirement. Although Moyes began his stint with a Community Shield win against Wigan Athletic, this early success was a rare highlight in what turned out to be a troubled season.

Under Moyes' leadership, United experienced their worst-ever Premier League start, finishing in seventh place with 57 points from 34 games, well short of a Champions League spot. Moyes was dismissed in April 2014.

Reflecting on his time at Manchester United, Moyes admitted he still regrets not achieving more at the club. Speaking on William Hill’s "Up Front with Simon Jordan" (via Mirror), he said: “My time at Manchester United was a failure. If I have any regrets in my career, it's taking on one of the biggest jobs in world football and failing to make it work. That will always be my biggest regret when I retire.”

Moyes also shared the difficulties he faced, including the challenge of managing the fallout from his departure. He explained that he aimed to maintain Sir Alex Ferguson’s system and values, which he thought would suit him. Despite this, he faced criticism for his transfer dealings and management skills.

The 2013 summer transfer window was particularly frustrating for Moyes, with high-profile targets like Cesc Fàbregas, Thiago Alcântara, Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo, Leighton Baines, Luka Modric, and Ander Herrera failing to join United. By September 1, the only new signing was Marouane Fellaini.

Moyes recalled his efforts to sign Fàbregas, who was considering leaving Barcelona, and his failed attempt to bring Gareth Bale to United. Despite making a significant offer and arranging a helicopter for Bale, the player chose to join Real Madrid.

Nottingham Forest Sign Portugal Forward Silva

Nottingham Forest have signed Portugal international Jota Silva from Portuguese top-flight club Vitoria on a four-year deal. The 25-year-old forward netted 15 goals in 42 matches for Vitoria last season, earning him his first international call-up from Portugal manager Roberto Martinez in March, leading to his first two caps.

Forest, who finished 17th in the Premier League last season, just six points above the relegation zone, have been active in strengthening their squad this summer. In addition to Silva, they have signed Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic and Newcastle United’s Elliot Anderson to bolster their midfield.

Marko Stamenic, a defender from Partizan Belgrade, has also joined the club and has been loaned to Olympiacos, while goalkeeper Carlos Miguel has arrived from Brazilian club Corinthians.

Favour Ofili Misses 100m Qualification for Paris Olympics

Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili announced that she will not be competing in the 100-meter race at the ongoing Paris Olympics due to administrative failures by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC). In a series of tweets on Tuesday, Ofili expressed her frustration and questioned the trustworthiness of both organizations, calling for accountability for her missed opportunity.

The LSU Track and Field alumna hopes to participate in the 200-meter event. "It is with great regret that I have just been told I will not be competing in the 100 meters at this Olympic Games. I qualified, but those with the AFN and NOC failed to enter me. I have worked for four years to earn this opportunity. For what?" she tweeted.

Despite qualifying, Ofili revealed that officials did not enter her at the event, which was a repeat of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics situation. She added, "Please remember, in the last Olympic Games, I was not able to compete because AFN, NADC, and NOC failed to release funds for athletes to be tested, which made 14 Nigerian athletes who qualified unable to compete. Now this..."

"If those responsible are not held accountable for taking this opportunity from me, neither organization can ever be trusted in the future! The next one is the 200 meters. I hope I’m entered."

Ofili, who secured her place in the women’s 200m event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, was also entered for the 100m, 400m, and 4x100m relay. The 21-year-old, who tweeted around 10 pm, was one of 10 Nigerian athletes declared ineligible for the Olympics by the Athletics Integrity Unit due to insufficient testing in the lead-up to Tokyo 2020.
