New World Record: Nwachukwu Goodness Wins Commonwealth Gold Medal

Nwachukwu also set a world record with her throw of 36.56m. Sarah Edminston of Australia came second while Naibili Vanutisolo of Fiji Island took the third position.

Nigeria's Nwachukwu Goodness won a gold medal in the women's E42.44/61.64 discus throw event at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Unless you're Goodness Nwachukwu, it's not often that you get to watch an athlete break a World Record (WR) on her first try in a field event while competing in front of a packed stadium at a big competition like the Commonwealth Games.

The para-athlete from Nigeria did put on a show for the audience at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium, smashing not one but two world records in short succession to win her event at the Games.

In the women's Discus F42-44/61-64 event, Nwachukwu won the GOLD medal for Nigeria after delivering a dominant performance that distinguished her from the competition.

EPL Clubs To Stop Taking Knee Before Every Match

English Premier League football players said Wednesday they will no longer take the knee before every match in the upcoming season, following criticism that the anti-racism gesture was losing its impact.

In a Premier League statement, club captains said that instead, they would bend before selected games, “and in so doing we continue to show solidarity for a common cause”.

The league said it supported the captains’ decision, and would elevate anti-racism messaging as part of its “No Room for Racism” campaign – words that already feature on players’ sleeves.

Premier League players began taking the knee at the start of every game in June 2020, when the season resumed following a Covid shutdown, a month after the killing in the United States of George Floyd.

Ex-NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick started kneeling to protest against racial injustice in 2016 and the gesture has become a familiar sight across a range of sports since Floyd’s murder by a US police officer.

But several Premier League players queried its continuing relevance – and some right-wing politicians in Britain have criticised its identification with the Black Lives Matter protest movement.

Wilfried Zaha, a black striker for Crystal Palace, was an early dissident, labelling the gesture “degrading” and opting to stand instead.

Commonwealth Games: Elaine Thompson-Herah Races Away To 100m Gold

Elaine Thompson-Herah's experience shone through as the Jamaican added Commonwealth 100m gold to her collection in a time of 10.95 seconds.

The five-time Olympic champion was clean away and immediately up on England's Daryll Neita outside her.

Neita, who ran a personal best 10.90 in the semi-finals, could not make up the deficit and ended with bronze.

Kenya's Ferdinand Omanyala claimed the men's title ahead of South Africa's defending champion Akani Simbine.

Omanyala, who only converted to sprinting from rugby in his late teens, came home in 10.02 seconds to add the Commonwealth crown to the African title he claimed in June.

The 26-year-old's hopes of a hat-trick of titles this season had been scuttled by a visa delay that meant he arrived at last month's World Championships just two and a half hours before his first heat.

He was eliminated in the semi-finals in Eugene after running a disappointing 10.14.

By contrast, he dominated the Commonwealth final, powering away from Simbine, who finished back in 10.13.

Sri Lanka's Yupun Abeykoon claimed Sri Lanka's first athletics medal at the Games since 1998 by taking bronze in 10.14.

The 27-year-old's success comes amid political and civil unrest in the country that has extended to its Commonwealth team.

West Ham Agree £33.5m Deal For Lille And Belgium Midfielder

West Ham have agreed a fee of 40m euros (£33.5m) including add-ons for Lille midfielder Amadou Onana.

The Hammers are looking to bolster manager David Moyes' squad before a second consecutive European campaign.

However, the deal for Onana, 20, is not completed yet and personal terms are still to be agreed for the player.

The Hammers are also interested in signing Burnley playmaker Maxwel Cornet, 25, who scored nine goals in 26 games for the Clarets last season.

Dakar-born Onana was capped at youth level before making his senior Belgium debut in a 4-1 Nations League defeat to the Netherlands in June.

The 6ft 5in (1.98m) prospect began his youth career at Belgian clubs Anderlecht, RWS Bruxelles and Zulte Waregem before spending three seasons with Hoffenheim's academy.

Onana signed for Hamburg before the 2020-21 season and swiftly established himself as a first-team regular for the German second-tier side.

After joining then-French champions Lille in August 2021, Onana made 31 appearances in Ligue 1 last season and featured in all of the club's Champions League matches, starting in a 2-0 defeat at Chelsea in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

West Ham are set to make Onana their fifth signing of the close season following the arrivals of goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, midfielder Flynn Downes, defender Nayef Aguerd and forward Gianluca Scamacca.
