Serena Williams Announces Her Retirement From Tennis

Serena Williams has announced her upcoming retirement from tennis as she admitted on Tuesday she is "evolving away" from the sport.

The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion made just her second appearance of the year this week as she defeated Nuria Parrizas at the National Bank Open in Toronto.

She admitted afterwards she was "getting close to the light at the end of the tunnel" with regards to her remarkable career, before furthering that statement with a Vogue article in which she alluded towards walking away.

Williams noted that her and her partner Alexis are trying for another child, and that she did not want to be pregnant as an athlete again. In the piece she recalls that she had been two months pregnant with daughter Olympia when she won the Australian Open in 2017.

The 40-year-old was knocked out by Harmony Tan at Wimbledon in her first singles match for a year earlier this summer, but has her sights set on the US Open in what could prove her farewell tournament.

Williams' last Grand Slam title came in 2017 to take her tally to 23, leaving her one shy of a 24th that would bring her level with Margaret Court's record for most majors.

She underlined her imminent retirement by suggesting "the countdown has begun", noting that she was "relishing" what could be the final few weeks of her career.

Williams won her maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open in 1999 when she defeated Martina Hingis just weeks before turning 18.

RB Leipzig Re-Sign Werner From Chelsea On Four-Year Deal

RB Leipzig have completed the signing of Chelsea forward Timo Werner on a permanent deal, two years after he left the club for the Premier League.

Chelsea met the Germany international’s £45m release clause in 2020 but will make a loss, with Werner set to return in a deal thought to be around £25m.

The 26-year-old was pictured arriving in Leipzig for a medical on Monday.

Werner scored 23 goals in 89 games in all competitions for Chelsea, winning the Champions League in 2021.

He was one of the most sought-after forwards in Europe when the Blues signed him in the summer of 2020, having also attracted interest from Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid.

He scored 95 goals in 159 games in all competitions for Leipzig during his first spell at the club, after arriving from Stuttgart in 2016.

Werner failed to replicate that goal scoring form in the English top flight, netting just 10 times in two seasons,

However, he played an important role in Chelsea’s run to European success in his first campaign, scoring in the semi-final second leg against Real Madrid.

Chelsea initially held talks with Leipzig about Werner returning to the club on loan but that has turned into a permanent deal.

Inter Milan Terminate Alexis Sanchez Contract

Inter Milan have ended forward Alexis Sanchez's contract by mutual agreement.

Chile's Sanchez scored 20 goals in 109 appearances for the Serie A side after joining from Manchester United on an initial loan deal in 2019.

The 33-year-old helped Inter to their first league title for 11 years in the 2020-2021 season, but has struggled for regular playing time.

Sanchez, who also had four seasons at Arsenal, has been linked with a move to French side Marseille.

“The club would like to wholeheartedly thank Alexis for these last three seasons, in which the Nerazzurri won three major honours, and we wish him all the best for his future career,” Inter said in a statement.

Everton Sign Conor Coady On Season-Long Loan

Everton have signed England international Conor Coady on a season-long loan from Wolves, who have captured Goncalo Guedes from Valencia on a five-year deal.

The Toffees have beaten West Ham to Coady's signature, with the deal bringing the 29-year-old's seven-season stay at Molineux - four of which as captain - to an end.

The move to Goodison Park presents Coady with regular first-team football and the opportunity to strengthen his claim to be included in England's squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Coady was dropped by Wolves manager Bruno Lage for Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Leeds - the first time he had been intentionally left out of a Wolves game shirt since April 2017 - and he remained an unused substitute at Elland Road.

Coady is Everton's fourth signing of the summer following the arrivals of centre-back James Tarkowski and forward Dwight McNeil from Burnley and defender Ruben Vinagre from Wolves.

Coady made more than 300 appearances in seven seasons at Wolves after joining from Huddersfield.
