Premier League To Reintroduce Drinks Breaks This Weekend

Drinks breaks will be implemented during Premier League fixtures this weekend because of high temperatures across the UK.

The Met Office has issued an amber extreme weather warning for southern and central England and parts of Wales.

Temperatures are forecast to reach as high as 37C (99F).

The English Football League will also have drinks breaks in each half as per its current policy when pitchside temperatures are 30C or above.

Drinks breaks were first introduced by the Football Association during the Covid-19 pandemic, when then the 2019-20 season resumed in mid-June.

Temperatures have already risen over 30C in some parts of the UK this week.

A break was called in Sunday's Premier League match between West Ham and Manchester City while evening games in the Carabao Cup first round earlier this week - including Coventry v Bristol City - also featured water breaks.

"The heat will always have a bearing on the intensity of the game and the importance on keeping possession of the ball is greater," said Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers on Thursday.

"Over the course of 90 minutes, it does have an impact, but you have to deal with these situations when they arise."

Nottingham Forest Tables £20m For Emmanuel Dennis

Emmanuel Dennis looks set to join compatriot Taiwo Awoniyi at Nottingham Forest as the Reds have made an opening bid for the Super Eagles forward.

Forest’s Steve Cooper wants the Watford striker to increase his striking options after signing Awoniyi from Union Berlin on a then record deal worth £17.5m in July.

The two clubs are in advanced talks over a deal for Dennis and there is optimism from all involved it will get completed.

Forest are prepared to pay £20m for the Nigeria international, who has only been at Vicarage Road for one season.

Watford signed Dennis last summer from Club Brugge for around £3m and was a hit during his first season in England.

Despite the Hornets suffering relegation from the Premier League, the 24-year-old managed to score 10 goals.

Dennis has attracted interest from plenty of clubs this summer, including Everton and Villarreal, but Forest are the first ones to make a concrete offer.

The Nigerian is keen on the move to the Midlands as he wants to test himself in the Premier League again.

FIFA U- 20 Women’s World Cup: Nigeria Beats France 1-0

Nigeria’s under-20 National Women’s Football Team (Falconets) defeated France 1- 0 in their opening game of the ongoing FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica on Friday at Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica, San Jose.

The Falconets, playing in group C, began their opening match with their French counterparts but after barely 32 minutes after the first half, the match was suspended due to heavy rainfall.

The Centre Referee halted the match to save both teams from the bad weather.

On resumption, both teams continued from where they stopped with the Falconets showing supremacy in the game.

They dictated the pace of the match from the start and had the majority of ball possession with 52 per cent as against France with 48 per cent.

On resumption in the second half, both teams struggled for the ball with Mercy Idoko trying to score for the team
Nigeria but the French goalkeeper frustrated her efforts in the 56th minute.

France fought well a few minutes later and netted the ball but was overruled by the referee.

In the 85th minute, Flourish Sabastine broke the deadlock with a Mercy Idoko’s pass which fetched them the late winning goal.

The French girls continued to fight back but were unable to get any goal until the game closed in favour of Nigeria.

Nigeria will face South Korea on Sunday in their next match. The Falconets are paired in Group C alongside France, South, Korea and Canada.

CAF Officially Endorses Infantino For FIFA Re-Election

The Confederation of African Football President Patrice Motsepe has officially endorsed the re-election of FIFA President Gianni Infantino on behalf of the continent at the CAF Ordinary General Assembly in Tanzania, continuing the support for the incumbent candidate.

Motsepe said African National Federations would back “our brother based in Europe” at the Assembly in Arusha.

As things stand, Infantino is the only candidate for FIFA Presidency, as he aims to serve for a third term.

He was elected unopposed in 2019 after winning a four-person race to the position in 2016.

Infantino thanked African members for their support.

The FIFA Elective Congress is scheduled to take place on March 16 2023 in Africa, where Infantino will seek re-election with Rwanda set to host it.

The FIFA and CAF Presidents then confirmed the launch of the African Super League, which is scheduled to start in the 2023-2024 season.
