Falconets Through To Quarter-Finals After Beating Korea Republic

Nigeria’s U20 girls, Falconets have reached the last eight of the 10th FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup finals ongoing in Costa Rica after another gutsy performance saw them collect all three points from Korea Republic in a 1-0 win in Alajuela.

The top-of-the-table clash was highly anticipated as both teams knew a win would take them to the tournament’s quarter-finals, both having won their respective first games of the tournament. Korea Republic were top of the log on goal difference, having defeated Canada 2-0, after the Falconets had beaten France 1-0 on Friday morning.

There was little to choose between the two teams until midfielder Esther Onyenezide’s fierce curling shot flew past Yoonji Do for the only goal of the match in the 83rd minute.

Hayeon Mu missed from a corner kick and Garam Chun hit the upright from a free-kick, but Nigeria managed to keep things tight at the back even as energetic Mercy Idoko, Onyenezide and Bashirat Amoo worked tirelessly in the middle.

In the 54th minute, Onyenezide’s rasping shot from the right side was parried away by Do, and 10 minutes later, it was the turn of Oyono Omini, in goal for Nigeria, to parry away a fierce 25 –yard shot unleashed by Eunyoung Lee.

Resilient midfielder Onyenezide would have the last word, curling a fierce shot past Do with only seven minutes to go to send Africa’s best team into the quarter-finals.

The Falconets still have to play Canada in the early hours of Thursday, but they surely would already be looking at possible quarter-final opponents from Group D.

Mourinho’s Roma Start With Win Against Salernitana

The updated Jose Mourinho Roma started the Serie A campaign at Salernitana with a spirited but well-earned victory.

Roma won thanks to a first-half goal by Bryan Cristante that was deflected just enough to go in the corner of the net.

They could have won by more since Tammy Abraham's follow-up shot was stopped and rookie Paulo Dybala's shot struck the post.

Additionally making their debuts were Nemanja Matic and Georginio Wijnaldum, the latter of whom was denied a goal on his Roma debut by the offside flag.

Matic, a former midfielder for Manchester United and Chelsea, agreed to a one-year contract in Rome in May. In addition, Dybala joined on a free transfer from Juventus in July, while Wijnaldum, on loan from Paris St. Germain, joined last week.

Nicolo Zaniolo also went close on several occasions for the visitors against a Salernitana side who stayed up by a single point in only their third ever Serie A campaign last season.

Roma finished sixth in their first full season under Mourinho in 2021-22 but won the Europa Conference League and will play in the Europa League this term.

Nottingham Forest Sign Emmanuel Dennis From Watford

Nigerian striker Emmanuel Dennis has been signed by Nottingham Forest from Watford.

Last season, the 24-year-old scored 10 goals for the Hornets in the Premier League, but he was unable to keep them in the competition.

Dennis participated in Watford's first two Sky Bet Championship games, but was absent from the starting lineup for Friday night's victory against Burnley as he completed a move to the City Ground.

In a statement, the club said it was "delighted to confirm the acquisition of striker Emmanuel Dennis from Watford."

Forest did not divulge the conditions, but it was said that a £20 million price had been agreed upon.

During the summer transfer window, manager Steve Cooper significantly enhanced his team by adding new players.

Forest have also been linked with Brighton forward Neal Maupay, who was left out of Saturday’s squad against Newcastle.

Man. City Agree Fee With Anderlecht For Spain Under-21s Defender

Manchester City have agreed a fee of 13m euros (£11m) plus add-ons with Anderlecht for Spain Under-21s defender Sergio Gomez.

City were looking at left-sided options after failing to complete a deal for Brighton's Marc Cucurella, who joined Chelsea last week for £62.5m.

If not promoted to the first-team squad, Gomez could be loaned to City Football Group club Girona in Spain.

He came through the Barcelona academy before joining Borussia Dortmund.

Gomez, 21, then spent two years on loan at Huesca in 2019, before joining Anderlecht where he played under former City captain Vincent Kompany.
